TITLE: Second Chances By Pam Smith 08/31/06 |

I am still working on it. Thank you for your time and comments.
Prologue
Andrew and Emily were friends in high school. When Andrew moved to Texas with his mother and new step-father in January of their junior year, they stayed in touch. Emily noted that some of the letters seemed that he wanted to be more than just friends. But nothing blossomed in the long distance relationship.
As the summer ended, Andrew stopped writing. Emily thought that he was probably busy getting ready for the start of school. She certainly was. She had spent the summer collecting ideas for the newspaper. She had been appointed the Editor-in-Chief for her senior year. She also had been elected president of a new service club at her high school called Care. Her responsibilities included establishing goals and organizing service projects for the club.
In fact one of the projects for Care led to Andrew’s surprise. Emily was on campus the week before classes began. Care’s first service project was assisting the guidance office with class scheduling for the new year. Emily looked up and out of nowhere Andrew was there. With the permission of his mother, he was staying with his grandmother in Pinewood so he could complete high school with his friends.
Emily and Andrew remained friends during their last year of school. Nothing romantic ever transpired. After graduation the two went their separate ways. Emily left for college in North Carolina and Andrew had went to Gainesville. The two lost touch with each other and began living their adult lives. Andrew started work after college in Atlanta. Emily completed her nursing degree. Both excelled in their careers.
Chapter 1
5 years later.
“Alan, where are you?“ Emily said to herself. Looking out the window of Antonio’s, she remember their conversation over breakfast. Alan had told her not to be late. He was the one that insisted on 6:30. She knew it would be hard for him to get through Atlanta rush hour traffic to be on time. It was tradition that they have their anniversary dinner at Antonio’s. They had had their first date there. Alan had proposed to her there. Antonio always had a reserved table for them.
Today, being their third anniversary, Antonio had already shown Emily the table he had arranged for them. Antonio thought of them as two of his own children. He had partitioned off the back table near the fireplace and had a bottle of sparkling white grape juice chilling for them. “Just for you” Antonio had said handing her a yellow rose. Antonio liked to surprise them with a new dish in honor of their anniversary. Emily wondered what it would be this year.
She then thought of the surprise she would tell Alan about tonight. She was expecting their baby. She had the ultrasound picture in the anniversary card she held in her hand. Alan would be so happy. They had decided to start a family just over a month ago. God had blessed them quickly. She then touched her stomach. “Don’t worry. Daddy has a habit of running late.”
At almost 7, she was vacillating between worry and anger. On their night, what would hold him up so long. Her cell phone rang. she looked at the number before answering. It was the ER, when she left today, she had said she could not work cover tonight. She thought about not answering for a second but did end up answering, “Hello.”
“Emily, it’s Tim.”
“Tim, I can’t come into work. It’s my anniversary. I have plans.” Emily said before giving him a chance to ask.
“Emily, it’s not that. You need to come down here. It’s Alan.”
“What? He was supposed to meet me at Antonio’s not there.” she said puzzled.
Tim continued, “There has been an accident. Emily, you need to come down.”
Emily’s heart sank. “Alan, I am sorry I got angry at you.” She said to herself as she headed toward her car. From Tim’s tone she knew it was bad. She had made the same type of calls many times before. If the accident victim was okay and would be fine, you told them immediately. It relieved their worry. If it was bad, well, you just could not bring yourself to tell them over the phone.
Emily took a deep breath before asking, “Tim, be honest with me. How bad is it?”
After a long pause, Tim reluctantly answered, “He, he did not make it. Where are you? I‘ll have someone come pick you up.” After hearing that he had died, knowing she would be upset, he did not want her driving to the hospital.
“No, I’m on my way already. I’ll be there in 5-10 minutes.” she said in shock. She hung up the phone, tears running down her cheeks.
When she got to the ER, Tim was waiting for her at the entrance. He asked one of the other nurses to let Dr. Reinhart know she had arrived and then took her in the family room. Tim began, “I am so sorry, Emily. I called Keith. Alan had his business card in his wallet. I figured he was your minister. He should be here soon.”
Dr. Reinhard and a police officer entered the room and closed the door. Emily knew them both from working in the ER. The officer, Craig Cooper, sat down beside her and said, “Emily, I am sorry. I saw the accident. A semi ran a light and t-boned Alan’s car. The driver said the he tried to stop but his brakes froze. We will be investigating the accident. I am so sorry.”
Dr. Reinhard then explained to her that he had suffered massive head injuries and had died instantly. Emily just sat there. She had been in that very room - giving a mother, or father, husband, wife the same news. Some of them screamed and yelled. Some like her just sat in shock and disbelief. The tears flowed. She did not know how long she had been sitting there when Keith arrived with his wife Alana. Dr, Reinhard had already left. Craig got up and excused himself and Keith sat by Emily and gave her a hug. “We are here for you, Emily.” Keith said.
“May I see him Tim.” Emily asked.
“Emily, he is in trauma room B. I know you know what to expect from your trauma experience. But it is different when it is your own family - remember that.” Tim cautioned.
Tim took her and Keith into the trauma bay while Alana called and initiated the church’s phone tree. Tim was right. It was nearly overwhelming to see Alan. But she had to see him, to make it real to her. After visiting Alan and giving the funeral home information to Tim, Keith drove her home as Alana followed in their car. Erin met her in the driveway. Erin was her best friend and neighbor.
“Erin, he’s gone.” Emily said tearfully.
Erin could not find words at that moment, so she just held Emily and walked with her in the house. Erin sat with Emily on the couch and Alana and Keith on the love seat. Erin saw the card in Emily’s hand and tried to get her to put it down on the table with her purse.
Through the tears Emily realized that she was still holding the anniversary card for Alan. Turning it over in her hand, she began to open it. “This was my card for Alan. He will never know.”
Keith interjected, “Alan knew you loved him. He loved you.”
“I know, but that is not -” she paused for a minute to gain composure, “Tonight I was going to tell him. I went to the doctor today. He didn’t know. I am pregnant.”
“Emily,” Alana said, she wanted to say congratulations but in the midst of this tragedy. “I am happy for you. It is - today is both a day to mourn and rejoice. It is so hard to put into words.”
“You are so right.” Emily responded, “I want to be happy - I am happy about the baby. But Alan’s gone. It is overwhelming. I don’t know where to start, or what to do.”
“First, you need to get some sleep. Did you realize that it is after 11?” Erin said.
Keith added, “Then, I will help with the arrangements, if you would like?”
“But I haven’t called his parents or -” Emily began.
Erin interrupted, “I had Marc call them and your mother and brothers. They are making arrangements to get her. Marc is manning the phone at home. We can check to see if any one has called back with travel plans. Tomorrow morning, you need your rest.” (speaking of her own husband.)
Emily reluctantly agreed, she was tired but doubted she would be able to sleep. “Ok, but look at the first picture of our baby.” Emily had pulled the ultrasound photo out of the card.
They looked at the picture with bitter sweet emotions. Then Alana and Keith left. Keith had arranged to come back in the morning around 9 to help with arrangements. Erin stayed the night with Emily.
Emily did not think she would be able to sleep. The house and everything in it reminded her of Alan. But exhaustion took over and she did get a little sleep. It was hard to believe Alan was with her just yesterday making dinner plans. And now she had to plan his funeral. Keith went with her to the funeral home while Erin went to the airport to pickup Alan’s family.
As they sat planning the service, Emily spoke of the importance of sharing the gift of Christ with those attending the funeral. Keith knew many may never have stepped foot in a church before. They chose the scripture from II Corinthians 4:14 for the service, “because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence.”
“Keith, if you are called to lead my funeral.“ Emily began.
“Emily, no we don’t need to talk about that. You have lots of time left. What songs would you like to use? Keith interrupted.
Emily returned to her thoughts and shared them, “Keith, it’s important to me. From my time working in the ER and now with Alan’s death, tomorrow is not guaranteed to anyone. Alan never wanted to talk about it either. I want people to know my wishes - it is so hard to think about what he would have wanted. I don’t want my loved ones to face that. I plan to write some thoughts down. Please say you will hang onto it a copy for me.
And second, I would like the last act of service of Christ to be sharing the gift of grace and forgiveness with others. I know I won’t be there physically but I want them to see a glimpse of Christ’s gift.”
Keith pondered the words Emily said for a minute. “I will for you.”
The two discussed the songs that Alan liked and settled on a couple. Over the rest of that day and the next many of her friends and family, helped her through. During the funeral she clung to the thought of the precious life inside her, her and Alan’s baby.
Then not more than a couple days after the funeral and family returned home, she began bleeding and cramping. She was alone for the first time in days.
Emily could not think. She picked up the phone and called Erin, “Erin, I’m bleeding. The baby.“
“I am on my way.“ Erin said. Erin took her to the ER but nothing could be done. She lost the baby too.
Back at home Erin felt helpless. She prayed for Emily. She had seemed to be handling the grief after Alan’s death. But now with that and then her unborn child, Emily was so devastated. Erin tried to encourage her and just be there for her, over the next couple of weeks.
“Emily, you should go with me. We already paid for the retreat.“ Erin pleaded.
“No! I don’t want to go. I am just too mad and sad and - I am just not ready to face people.” Emily said emphatically.
Erin continued, “They are your friends, your church sisters. Look just come and if you choose to sit in our room the whole time fine. If you need to leave a session, fine. But just come and let the Lord start the healing. I just have a feeling that you need to be there.”
“I can stay in the room.”
“Yes, if that is what you want.”
“No pressure.”
“No pressure, Em” Erin answered with a hug.
“Ok. I’ll go.” Emily agreed finally.
That Friday night, Emily did stay in her room during the first devotional. But Saturday morning Erin enticed her to join them on the lakefront for the morning devotional. They were discussing the peace of Christ.
On the night before He was crucified, he was distressed and troubled. He was in agony. He knew what was coming. He took that grief and pain to His Father and prayed. Not once or twice. Three times. He cried. But after a time, he had peace. He faced the mob that eventually led him to the cross with peace.
By the end of that devotional, Emily realized that she was not accepting God’s help - his peace and comfort. She confessed, “Lord, I am sorry. I have been stubborn and angry at you. I need your help. I need your comfort and peace. Please show me your peace. Open my heart to learn from this loss. Amen.”
Over the next couple of months she worked through the grief. But, it was now different. She accepted God’s help and that from her friends.
Chapter 2
“Mom, I don’t know. I am not sure I want to go to the reunion. I have not kept in touch with anyone I graduated with.” Emily said to her mother over the phone.
“Stan and Lorie, just asked, they are trying to finalize the plans. It is not for another couple weeks - the last weekend in June. I think it would be good for you to see some of your old friends and classmates. Reconnect with some of them.”
“But, without Alan. I just -”
“Honey, they want to see you. They didn’t know Alan. Some will ask. But it is okay. God will be with you.”
Emily thought about it for a minute and finally agreed. “Let me have Lorie’s number. I’ll call her to get the details.” She could use a weekend away.
“Hotel Graham will reserve a room for you that weekend then.” Emily’s mother said joking. It had been a long standing joke when she or her brothers visited home.
Emily arrived at the banquet hall. She was nervous. Seeing classmates she had not seen since graduation. She hadn’t even talked or written many of them in the last ten years. She got a soda, found a seat and watched the others mingling. In high school, she was quiet and not a ‘social butterfly‘. She got along with everyone but never really had any “close” friends. Some may say a ’wallflower’. She liked to think of it more as people watching.
Someone tapped her on the shoulder. “Hey, you haven’t changed much?” the person said.
As she turned around, she recognized him, “Andrew. I don’t know about that. Ten years is a long time. You look great yourself.”
“May I?” he asked pointing to the chair beside her.
“Sure, so, what’s been up?” Emily asked.
Andrew thought for a second, “How long do you have? We have ten years to catch up on.” He saw the ring on her finger and a tinge of jealousy hit him. He then asked looking around the room, “Where’s your husband? I would like to meet him.”
Sorrow crossed her face and she twisted the wedding ring on her finger “I - I am a widow. He died about 4 months ago. I simply haven’t been ready to take this off yet.”
“Emily, I am sorry for your loss. If you want to talk about him, I’ll listen. If not, we can find other things to talk about.” Andrew said sensing her sorrow.
Emily felt at ease. She remember it had been that way in high school. “Thanks, Andrew. I am okay. Hey, what about you? Is there a Mrs. Ayers around here?”
“No, Mrs. Ayers. I have never married. I guess the right girl has not come along. Where is home for you now?”
“Atlanta, just outside of it in Marietta actually.” Emily said. “How about you?”
With a grin on his face, he answered, “You won’t believe it but Marietta.”
“No”
“Yes, I am serious. See.” He showed her his driver’s license. They laughed.
“I’ll save you the trouble of not believing me. Here - just don‘t look at the picture.” she handed him her license. And they laughed even harder. They lived in the same subdivision about 3 blocks apart. Their laughter got the attention of several others in the room. Andrew explained and they shared in the laughter.
Later in the evening, when the class was “giving out awards” (like classmate with the most kids, married the longest, and traveled the most miles to the reunion), Stan said, “We have decided to add a category. ‘The classmates living the closest to each other without knowing it’ I think we know who that would be Andrew Ayers and Emily Graham Ford. They live 3 blocks from each other and found out they are neighbors tonight.” Everyone laughed.
As the night continued, Emily and Andrew continued to talk. They two shared memories of high school. Emily talked about Alan. After the party, broke up the two drove to the local park and sat on two swings and continued to talk. Before they realized it the sun was coming up.
After they returned to Marietta, they continued to see each other. It was almost like when they were in high school. Andrew did not push. He just enjoyed her friendship.
After a couple of months, Andrew took Emily to Stone Mountain. As they watched the laser show, he tentatively reached for her hand. She intertwined her fingers with his. As they walked to the car hand in hand, he asked, “Are you okay with this?” lifting their hands.
She stopped, “Andrew, thank you for asking. And yes, I am ready to move on. You didn’t notice. I took Alan‘s ring off this morning. I love him but he is in my past. I love you.”
“Good. I have wanted to say those same words to you and do this for 11 years.” He then kissed her.
“Eleven years?”
“I have since high school.” He explained sheepishly. She just smiled and they continued toward the car.
After work the next day, she went over to Erin’s. “So.” Erin knew by the look on Emily’s face. She was happy.
“Last night at the laser lights at Stone Mountain. Remember I told you I suspected he had feelings for me in high school. He did. We do.”
Erin smiled and gave her a hug “I am so happy for you. I am glad you can smile again.”
“So, why the reservation in your voice?” Emily knew Erin well enough to know see the subtle hesitation.
“I am happy for you. But he is not a believer.”
Emily took a deep breath, “I have been praying about it. He is coming to church services with me. He is open to learning.”
“I just want you to be happy and move on. But don‘t forget what the Bible says about relationships with unbelievers.”
“I have thought about that - a lot. I am afraid it may be too late. To avoid someone getting hurt, if he never accepts Christ. Please pray about it.”
Over the next few months, Andrew and Emily continued to grow closer. Andrew picked her up from work after Emily finished her shift on Christmas day. The couple went to her house. “I have a present for you.”
“Andrew, you already gave me that lovely coat and flowers morning before you took me to work.”
“This is something special.” He opened the door and let her in. The only lights on were on the Christmas tree in the living room. She sat down on her usual spot on the couch. He held up a finger signaling to give him a minute as he went into the kitchen.
When he returned, he knelt down beside her.” Emily, I love you. I have kicked myself so many times over the years that I never told you that in high school. Will you right my wrong and consent to be my wife?” He showed her a beautiful ring.
“Yes, I will. I would love to be your wife.” She had tears glistening in her eyes as Andrew placed the ring on her finger. And they kissed. They talked for a few minutes before he left since it was so late.
The next morning she went to the cemetery to visit Alan’s grave. “Alan, you would want me to move on and I am. I will always keep you in my heart.” She stayed for about 20 minutes before leaving to join Erin for lunch.
“Emily, why didn’t you tell me?” Erin spotted the ring before they sat down good.
“He popped the question last night. When was I supposed to tell you?”
“True. You should have called.”
“I got off work at 11 last night. So that puts it about 12 hours ago that he asked me. I’ll call you and wake you up the next time I get engaged. Will that satisfy you?”
“I guess so. Details now.”
Emily described the proposal and then they talked about wedding plans.
Chapter 3
The wedding was set for mid June. As the day got closer. Emily with her quiet spirit continued to encourage and lead Andrew toward Christ. Andrew appreciated that Emily was not overly pushy about accepting Christ.
How could bad things happen if God loved His children? He would question. Emily talked about God using them to help his children - for service or to grow. He just was not ready to commit to God maybe soon. He remember his grandmother believed and she had seen her die slowly of cancer. Emily believed and she lost her husband and baby. Inwardly, he was glad. Otherwise, he would not be committing to a life with Emily in 2 weeks.
But making a decision about God could wait. Today he had to tell her about the trial. She needed to know before it hit the news. The trial was coming up in a couple of weeks. He had not intentionally not told her. He had planned to but it never seemed to be the right time. When they first found each other again at the reunion, he did not want to burden her about it because it had not been that long since she had lost Alan. Then he was enjoying falling in love to think about it.
He had arranged a lunch date with her to tell her today. He finished packing the picnic basket and put it in the car. He then picked her up.
“Emily, you’re a little quiet today.” Andrew said, breaking the silence as they arrived at the park.
“Sorry. I was thinking about work yesterday. Did you see the news this morning? A family was murdered last night. I did not hear the details but I treated the 2 and 6 year-old. The 2 year old little girl should live but she lost both her parents and older brother. It was pretty bad. I did hear the police say they have a witness and enough evidence to conflict the killer.”
“That is one of the things I love about you. Thinking about others. Caring about them.” He gave her a squeeze on her hand.
They got the blanket and picnic basket and spread it out on the ground by the creek. Andrew interrupted Emily’s thoughts again, “Before we eat, I need to tell you something important. Let‘s walk.”
“Okay.” Emily said. They followed the path along the stream.
“Before the reunion last year, I witnessed a crime.”
“I don’t understand. You are acting like you were involved, you weren‘t were you?”
“No, no.” He replied with a chuckle.
“Then you have nothing to worry about. I have testified in court before. You will be fine.”
“Please, let me explain. I am not nervous about testifying. It was the murder of one of my business partner. The killer was my other partner. I just want you to know because it may affect the business negatively. And the publicity surrounding it will be tremendous.”
“Ron Miller? Right. It is no big deal. God will get us through whatever happens. Do you want to talk about it?”
“Yes, it was Ron. I wasn’t sure how you would take it. After I didn’t tell you all this time, I mean. I never meant to wait this long to tell you. We can talk about the details later.”
“Stop worrying. I know now. But remember never let it happen again.” she said in a mock scolding tone. “Now, I am hungry. Let‘s eat.” she grabbed his arm and pulled him back upstream.
The couple arrived back to their picnic area. Emily offered a prayer before eating. As they enjoyed the food, Emily asked, “Honestly, where are you at, with God I mean.”
“Emily, I just don’t know where I am at. I know He loves me. I know he wants a relationship with me. I love to watch you as you talk to God. I envy your relationship and understanding of Him.”
“Andrew, you don’t have to envy me. You can have the same type of relationship. It takes a prayer and willingness on your part. He is waiting for you. I have been praying that you would make that step. Our relationship -” Emily trailed off and went silent. She knew their relationship needed Andrew to accept Christ but she did not want to nag. She knew his decision had to be for him not to please her.
“Emily,” Andrew lifted her chin so she would look at him. “I love you. I know you want me to believe and trust God. And you have worked so hard to share your faith with me without pressuring me. You have done a wonderful job. Honestly, I need a little more time. I have so much on my plate right now - the wedding and the trial after that. Trust me I know your position. I know Christ is waiting.”
Emily wanted to say more. God didn’t care about the busyness. God could help him through it. Should she call off the wedding until he decided? That would only cause more pressure on him. Andrew would accept Jesus - but why was he delaying the decision. Emily decided to give him his time and said, “Andrew, I love you too. I want to be there for you. I want you to have joy and happiness.”
“I am happy. You make me happy.” Andrew said. The two finished their lunch.
Chapter 4
The next 2 weeks flew by with the final preparations for the wedding. When the day of the wedding arrived it was hard to believe it was already here.
Emily sat at the dressing table, as Erin helped her finish her hair. She thought about her mother. She had had an emergency appendectomy in Florida last week and could not make the ceremony. Her mom insisted that it was not necessary to reschedule the wedding. If truth be told, she threatened her if she did postpone it. Emily laughed to herself.
“What?” Erin asked.
Emily explained why she had laughed, “I was remembering the conversation about postponing today with my mom. She said to me, ‘You postpone it and I won’t show up for that one, so you might as well do it now.’”
“I can see her saying that. till think about how you two ,” Erin said to Emily. “You know, every time I think about it, I can’t believe you two found each of again. ‘Truth is stranger than fiction’ sometimes.
“I know, sometimes I wonder what would have happened if we had began dating in high school. But then I remember that God has us in his hands. And his plan was not then but now. “ Emily responded. Sensing that slight hesitation, that seemed to always be there, “Erin, he will come to accept Christ. I feel it.”
“Okay, I won’t ruin your day. Now let’s go get you married.” Erin said as she headed to the door.
They walked to the living room where the guests were waiting. As the ceremony began, the minister asked Andrew, as arranged, “Who in this gathering do you chose to marry?”
Andrew slowly answered, “I choose Denise.”
A gasp fell over the crowd. But the wedding went on.
Emily in shock ran out. Erin longed to follow and comfort her but could not because of her part in the ceremony as matron of honor.
Emily stopped on the porch in tears. She could not believe what was happening. “God, why? You took Alan. And the baby. Now this?“ She prayed silently. Was this punishment? She knew Andrew was not a believer. “Lord, I know Paul penned the words in 2 Corinthians - ‘do not be yoked to an unbeliever’ but Lord, he is searching for you. Was I wrong to think he would accept you?“
Emily decided to walk home. She needed to be alone. So she started toward the sidewalk. Who was this Denise? Why did Andrew do this? Why didn’t he tell her? It was so humiliating but the pain she felt was worse. In her grief and shock, Emily did not notice she was being followed.
As she crossed the street, she heard the door to Andrew’s house open. She looked back and saw Andrew and Denise, followed by the guests, pouring out of the house. Then the man following her grabbed her arm.
“Hey, let me go? What do you think your doing?“ she said. She started to scream and tried to pull away but the grip on her arm tightened and she felt the cold steel muzzle of a gun against her back.
The man pressed the gun harder into her back and hissed in her ear, “Don’t say another word. Or I will kill Andrew. Just get into the van.” He led her toward one parked at the curb.
With the mention of Andrew, Emily stopped struggling. She looked at him across the street in his front yard. He was looking at her. The look on his face said it all, he did truly love her. “Lord, I don‘t understand but see me through this.” she thought as she complied and got in the van.
As Andrew walked out of the house all he could think about was Emily. He wished he could have explained things to Emily. He never wanted to hurt her but he had. He could not marry her. They had vowed to kill her if he proceeded with the wedding. More than they said he had to marry Denise instead.
He felt helpless before but now what has happening now. He thought it could not get worse but it was. Jason had Emily. He was forcing her into a van. He felt more than helpless - he felt totally powerless.
Once in the van, Jason bound Emily’s hands together with duct tape and blindfolded her while Willie drove. Emily, puzzled and scared, asked, “Who are you? Why are you doing this?”
Jason responded, “Well, I guess, you have the right to know…”
“Shut up, don’t say anything.” Willie interrupted.
“Let me decide what and how much to tell her,” Jason told Willie before continuing, “Emily - you will be our guest for awhile. You see we have some friends that we need Andrew to help out of a jam. And the way we see it he will be more cooperative as long as you are spending time with us.”
“You work for Mr. Stephens. You threatened him. You are the reason that he didn‘t marry me today.” Emily cried as tears welled up in her eyes. She now understood what had happened earlier during the ceremony. She again silently prayed, “Lord, I am sorry I doubted you. I know you will see me through. Be with Andrew -he needs your strength and love.” Emily was still scared but it did not overwhelm her. She felt an inner peace because God was with her.
“I see he told you about that night. At least his version. Let me tell you what really happened since he has confused the facts about that night. Denise said he was planning to propose to her before the argument between Mr. Stevens and Mr. Miller and accidental shooting. Then he went to that reunion and you added to his confusion. We didn’t threaten him. We just explained to him that love should not be the basis of a marriage. And he should marry Denise - since he had planned to ask her first.”
“Call it what you want. He never had any intention to marry her. And if he did, why did it take pointing a gun at me to convince him. You see violence is a threat.” She said.
Willie added, “That is why I never have or will fall in love. You can’t let your heart rule and mix you up. That happens when love is involved.”
Emily was not going to give these two anymore pleasure by arguing. She lay quietly on the floor trying to concentrate on the movement of the van so she could possibly determine where they were taking her.
Chapter 5
Andrew started toward the van. Denise grabbed his arm and whispered, “Don’t you even think about it or she is dead.”
Andrew stopped. He would not chance it. Andrew went to the reception and he tried hard to appear happy with Denise and put Emily out of his mind for now. But he kept finding himself thinking Emily. He had done what they asked. Why had they taken her?
When the reception was finally over and he was alone with Denise, he asked Denise, “Where is Emily? What have they done to her?”
“Cool down, sport.” Denise began, “You’ll get an explanation in time.”
“I want some answers now! This was not a part of the deal.” he angrily said.
“You listen to me. We are the ones making the rules, not you. Jason will be calling soon enough,” she stated as she poured a drink for herself.
A little later the phone rang. Andrew answered it, “Hello.” It was Jason.
“Well, Andy, congrats,” Jason said.
“You know I am not happy with this ‘arrangement’ of yours. Why did you take Em? Let me talk to her. If you have hurt her, I’ll…I’ll…” Andrew blurted out anxiously not knowing what or where to start with him.
Jason interrupted sternly, “You’re in no position to be threatening me. Emily is going to remain my guest until after the acquittal of Mr. Stephens and you do a few others projects for us. Oh, by the way she’s fine for now. I can see why you love her. She’s beautiful - but you are already married now. You can’t have her.”
Andrew said determinedly, “I will hunt you down if you hurt her in anyway. I promised you yesterday that I would not testify against Mr. Stephens. You didn’t have to snatch her.”
“And how can you aspect me to get him acquitted? I cannot guarantee that. I am not the only witness. You know the DA has the tape of your confession.” Andrew continued in desperation.
“I trust you will find a way to get that tape.” Jason interjected.
Defeated Andrew asked, “Can I talk to Em?”
“I’ll give you sixty seconds.” Jason replied.
After a couple of seconds, Emily came on the phone, “Andrew?”
“It’s me Emily. I love you. Are you okay?”
“I’m okay.”
“Let me explain.”
Emily interrupted, “You don’t need to explain.”
Andrew said, “I really am sorry to get you involved. They said they would kill you, if I married you and I had to ---- I couldn’t let them hurt you.”
“I’m okay. Scared but all right. I don’t blame you. Remember God is with me and you - God will turn this for good - Read Romans 8:28. Just promise me you will do the right thing no matter what they say or do--” Emily’s voiced trailed off.
Jason snatched the phone away and hit her in the head with the receiver several times. She cried out and then blacked out.
“Emily!!” Andrew yelled as he heard her scream in pain and the some banging noises. Then the phone disconnected. Andrew was left to wonder what had happened to Emily.
When Emily woke up. She wasn’t sure how long she had been out. But she knew she had a terrible headache. When she tried to sit up, she could not move. They had tied her to the bed. She laid back and cried.
Denise, who had changed into a black, sheer teddy, laughed, interrupting Andrew’s thoughts, “Let’s have our honeymoon.”
Get out of here.” Andrew yelled at her. “I’ll never consummate our marriage.”
Andrew walked out. He changed and laid on the couch in the den. Andrew tried to sleep but could not. He kept replaying the conversation with Emily and the day’s events. How can Emily trust in a God who allows things like this to happen? She sounded so calm, peaceful, resolved. Was that the gift of the Holy Spirit she has told me about? What was that verse she said? Romans 8 something.
He couldn’t think about that now. Jason had done something. What did he do to her? Andrew knew who could not trust Mr. Stephens or his men. He had to do something. So, after midnight when he was sure Denise was asleep, he snuck out. He went to the federal prosecutor’s home.
After about 10 minutes of knocking, Mr. Waters finally answered the door. “What do you want? Do you realize what time it is?” Mr. Waters groggily barked.
“Please, can I come in? I don’t have long.” Andrew pleaded.
“Okay,” Mr. Waters agreed, “Call me Peter.” He could hear the despair in Andrew’s voice.
“Peter,” Andrew exclaimed, “I need your help. Actually Emily needs your help. They have her. I can’t testify and I need the tape.”
“Andrew slow down, “Peter responded, as he put his hand on Andrew’s shoulder, “Who has Emily? I thought you married her today.”
“No,” Andrew said sadly.
“Take a deep breath and then you better start at the beginning.” Peter replied feeling confused from the late hour and the whirlwind of thoughts from Andrew.
“Mr. Stephens’ men - Willie and Jason - stopped me on my jog Friday night. They said if I proceeded with the wedding, Emily would die before the end of the ceremony. I, instead, was to marry his daughter, Denise. They also told I was not to testify. I agreed. I followed through with the plan. I did what they wanted. I couldn’t risk Emily’s life. But they took her. They now say I have to get Mr. Stephen’s acquitted, if I want to ever see her alive again.” Andrew began crying.
“When did they grab her? Have they contacted you since taking her?” Peter tried to get more information.
“I saw them force her in a van just after the ceremony. And I have talked to her.”
Peter began understanding and headed to the phone on the desk. “Let’s call the police.”
‘NO! We can’t call the police. They’ll kill her.” Andrew jumped up.
“Ok, no calls now. What did Emily say on the phone?” knowing that Andrew needed some time to think and calm down.
“She said she was okay, but they hurt her while I…we were talking. She was encouraging me. Both to have faith in God because he would see us through this and not give into the threats by going ahead and testifying. Before she could finish I heard her scream in pain and then we were disconnected. Please. Drop the charges.”
Look, I can’t drop the charges and I think you know that. But it’s your decision about testifying.”
Peter continued, “Emily is right. I became a Christian about 5 years. As a prosecutor, I realized that some people handle the crisis of crime with a special peace. They would pray with me, and talk about God’s protection. I decided to see for myself and have not regretted one minute since.
I know you are worried about Emily but please let me share with you two scriptures - first, Romans 8:28 - “And we know that God works all things for good of those who love him.” Jesus himself was murdered - died on the cross. That crime was used by God to give us the gift of salvation. What better act of good could that be?”
Andrew remembered, “Emily told me to read that verse tonight on the phone.”
“Emily, may not know now or ever how it will turn out for the good, but she trusts God to do just that. The other verse is one of my favorite passages. I see this verse coming alive almost daily, especially in my line of work. It is in James - James 1:2-4 “Consider it pure joy whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you be mature and complete.” Paul said when, not if, you face trials.
I like the way one of my former clients put it when I asked what was his secret was to the contentment I saw in him. He said that with God’s help - Christians live better, love better, cry better and die better. He was saying to me that he was showing God’s strength in the crisis not his own. God is with Emily giving her strength, no matter what happens.”
After a brief pause, Peter continued, “I hope that helps some. Let God help you too.
Right now let’s talk about what we can do. Please let me call my friend, Anthony. He is a special agent with the FBI and work on a plan. Before you say anything, we will be discreet. No one else we be involved.”
Andrew did not want to admit it but he did seem to be more at peace. Maybe God was helping him cope. “Okay, Peter. I’ll trust you, and Anthony, but no one else.”
Peter asked, “Do you have any ideas where they have her?”
“No, No. I don’t have any ideas. I have to go. If Denise wakes up and I’m gone… I don’t know what they would do to Emily.” said quickly when he realized how long he had been there.
“Okay, you go. I’ll discuss the situation with Anthony. Meet us at the All-Niter Diner on 39th and Peach Street at tomorrow morning about 2 a.m., if you can. Try to get them to let you talk to Emily again. Think of places they could have taken her. We have 4 days before we start jury selection and over a week before the trial itself starts. Don’t give up hope and trust God.”
Andrew said, “I’ll try,” as he was leaving. He was able to get in the house without waking Denise. Andrew slept fitfully on the couch.
Chapter 7
The phone woke him up about 9 on Sunday morning. He answered it. It was Emily. Fighting tears, Andrew asked, “Are you ok? Did Jason hurt you yesterday?”
“I just have a headache. He hit me. It feels like a nasty bruise but it’s okay.” Emily said before continuing with a hint of her location, “I didn’t think I would be able to sleep last night but the rain on the water lulled me to sleep.”
“I love you,” Andrew said in relief, “I am glad your okay.”
“I love you too.” Jason laughed sarcastically.
Andrew responded, “I was not talking to you. I warned you not to touch her. I’ll hunt you -”
“Now, now. Don’t make threats you can’t back up. And you better listen and listen good. I want to see in the paper on Tuesday that all the charges have been dropped . No more calls until I read the headlines.” Click. Andrew slammed the phone down. It immediately rang again.
“Hello.”
“No cops.”
“Wait. I can’t -” Click.
Andrew turned to Denise who had come into the den, “How can I get this done in 2 days. I’m supposed to be out of town -on my honeymoon until -. You call Jason and remind him.”
Denise snarled, “Sorry, but you will just have to talk the prosecutor into it without tipping them off or figure something else out. I don’t know where they are. You see that is for my protection. You know, I am staying in the enemy’s camp.”
“This isn’t the enemy’s camp. Emily is the innocent one. She’s in the enemy’s camp. When this is over, you will be in prison - if I don’t kill you first.”
“Temper, temper.”
Andrew stormed into the bedroom and locked the door. Andrew mind raced first he does not want me to testify, then get him acquitted and now the charges dropped. I’d have better luck booking a trip to the moon, he thought.
“God, what is this? Are you trying to test me? This is too much I can‘t handle this. No, wait you, Emily showed me a verse in Corinthians - God is faithful: He will not tempt you beyond what you can bear. Is it true?” Andrew realized he was actually praying. God was communicating with him, through things that Emily had shared with him. Her Bible - it had to be in her bag. She had changed for the ceremony in here yesterday. The bag should be here somewhere. He looked around the room. Where was it? There it was in the corner of the room.
When he took her Bible out of the bag, he stopped. “Emily, I wish you were here. You could teach me.” It dawned on him. Would he really be pursuing God like this if this had not happened? No - he had to admit it to himself. Through all the good times he had shared with Emily, all the gentle conversations, he had not turned to God. Was this God ‘shaking him’ to listen? He prayed, “God, show me where to start.”
Andrew turned to Corinthians trying to find the verse about tempting. He stopped in 2 Corinthians 12. Emily had a note in the margin that said - when I know I’m weak, when I admit it -> I am on the threshold of accessing God’s strength. Andrew searched for the verse it was referring to. The verse was 2 Corinthians 12:10 - “That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” God’s strength shines in crisis that’s what Peter was saying.
He began turning toward James to read the scripture Peter had shared. He stopped in Ephesians when he saw another note written by Emily. This one in Ephesians 1:11-12 - “In Him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, in order that we, who were the first to hope in Christ, might be for the praise of his glory.” He read Emily’s notes - God causes some things, God allows other things, But - He is in control of all things. She also wrote: God is in charge, God’s purpose of salvation cannot be thwarted, no matter what evil happens.
Andrew pushed the Bible back and laid down on the bed. He realized he needed to do a lot of thinking. “Emily, is this what you have been pushing me to see?” he said out loud.
Jason turned to Emily, “Now we wait to see how much he really loves you.”
“He does not have to ‘do what you say’ to prove that he loves me. In fact, I hope he does testify and send you and your boss to jail.”
Jason snapped, “For your sake, he better listen to me.” He grabbed her arm and dragged her back to ’her’ room and tied her up again. “Now I have some errands to run. Don’t worry though Willie will take good care of you.” He then left.
Chapter 8
Andrew slipped out of the house to meet Peter and Anthony about 1:30 the next morning. When he walked into the diner, Peter greeted him and said, “I’m glad you made it. I was worried that you might not come.”
“You know I really did not have a choice. Did you come up with anything?” Andrew responded sounding very tired.
After they took a sit at a table in the back, Peter introduced Anthony. Then he comments, “Well, my hands are tied. I can’t not proceed with the prosecution.”
“If we had an idea where they were holding Emily, we could attempt to rescue her. Were you able to get any information from Denise about where she may be?” Anthony asked.
“You cannot guarantee Emily’s safety if you do a raid.” Andrew responded.
“Andrew, you said that you know of only 2 men that Mr. Stephens would trust for this type of operation. So it should not be too hard to distract two people, if we knew where to start looking.” Peter calmly replied.
“True. Emily stated on the phone this morning about hearing the splash of rain on water - like a lake or the ocean maybe. Mr. Stephens mentioned to me once a beach house in Ft. Walton Beach. Do you think they could have taken her out of state so quickly? It was only maybe 3 hours from the time I last saw her Saturday and them calling. It did not sound like a cellular connection.”
Anthony answered, “I’ll check with the airport. He has a private jet. I’ll also have my contacts in Florida check out the house.”
“You have to be careful, very careful. He has connections. Jason made it clear this morning - no police involvement. Oh that reminds me- Jason also owns some property on Lake Allatoona.”
Peter responded, “Anthony will be discreet. Now how are we going to buy time until we can find her?”
“We don’t have a lot of time. Jason gave me 48 hours. He wants to see Mr. Stephens cleared in Tuesday’s newspaper or -. He was serious. Remember I told you how the conversation ended last night?”
“Great” Peter slammed his fist down on the table in frustration, “How do they expect us to act so quickly?”
Peter quickly apologized, “I’m sorry for that outburst. What happened to Emily last night? Did you ask her?”
“Jason hit her with the phone in the head. She sounded tired but said she was ok - just had a headache.”
All three knew they that were between a rock and a hard place. The Stephens gang didn’t want them to have the time to foil their plans, so they had to act quickly.
Andrew volunteered, “Let me call you at the office tomorrow and act like I am following through on their demands. That way we don‘t have to wait for another late night/early morning meeting.”
“And we could meet at the office.”
Anthony decided, “I’ll get to work on this and then let Peter know what we have before your appointment. He will fill you in.”
The three men departed. The next morning Andrew called Peter and requested the meeting. The appointment was made for 2 that afternoon. Andrew had hoped for an earlier time but knew that Anthony need time to search for the houses and gather information.
Andrew found it hard to concentrate on anything. He tried reading the paper and working. He even tried to read some more from her Bible but he could not bear to see Emily’s writing -so he put it away. No matter how much he tried, he could not keep his mind off of her. It kept going back to thoughts of her. He just wished that he had let her know his feelings in high school. They would be enjoying a family now. He would never have been with Denise that night. The night her father, Mr. Stephens, killed their business partner, Ron.
Andrew recalled that night. He was dropping Denise off after their date. He planned to tell her that he no longer wanted to see her. Before he could start, they were distracted by the argument in the den. They saw Mr. Stephens and Ron through the French doors. Mr. Stephens pulled out a gun and shot Ron. Mr. Stephens noticed Andrew and Denise watching. He then quickly went out to try to explain. He offered Andrew a bribe, as Jason and Willie “disposed of” Ron.
Andrew played along with Mr. Stephens’s plan until he could get away. He was afraid if he did not agree, he would be murdered too. He arranged to meet with Mr. Stephens the next morning. After leaving the Stephens’s house, he went home to think. The next morning he saw on the news that police had found Ron’s body and suspected he was the victim of a robbery. Before his 10:30 meeting with Mr. Stephens, he went to the police. The police detective decided that Andrew should wear a wire to the meeting. During the meeting, Andrew was able to get Mr. Stephens to admit to the murder and why. As Mr. Stephens left the office for lunch, he was arrested. Mr. Stephens hurled threats at Andrew as they were taking him away. “You’ll never testify against me. I’ll see to that.”
His life had been turned upside down. He had witnessed a murder. The murder of his mentor and partner by his other partner. His job may not be there when he returned but the next day Andrew left as planned for the reunion.
And his dream came true. He decided that night that he wasn’t letting her go again. Now he was losing her.
He checked his watch. It was time to leave. As he was leaving, Denise asked, “Where do you think you are going?”
“The prosecutor’s office.”
“I’m coming with you.”
“Oh, no you are not! I have to meet with the Peter Waters and you’re not invited. Don’t worry I’m not going to jeopardize Emily by saying the wrong thing. I’ll be back in a couple of hours.” He then slammed the door before she could say anything or follow him.
Chapter 10
Emily wondered what time it was. She hadn’t seen or heard anybody since Jason had let her go to the bathroom and gave her a bottle of water and a cheese sandwich just after daybreak Monday morning. He had tied her to the bed again.
Emily prayed again. That was all she could do in this situation. “Lord, I feel your presence. You have promised to be with me. To never leave me. I pray you will show me the good and purpose behind this. I know Paul faced so many trials and thanked you for them because as he said in Philippians (1:14) -‘my brothers in the Lord have been encouraged to speak …courageously…’ . But if I never know, it will be your will and I accept that. I am not concerned for myself I know whether I survive this or not I am with you. I do worry about Andrew. Please give him the comfort that I have.”
Just then the door opened, it was Willie. He came and sat down on the edge of the bed. Instinctively she moved as far from him as the ropes allowed. She feared him. Jason had to keep him on a short leash, and she knew Jason was gone. She had heard the car pull out not long after he secured her in the room this morning.
“Well, Emily it is time we got better acquainted. Willie said as he ran his hand across her leg and chest. He began untying her hands.
Emily struggled, “Leave me alone.”
“You know I can’t do that. You want me.”
Emily continued to fight against him but he was just too strong. The next thing she remembered was waking up. She realized for the first time since this began on Saturday that she was alone and not tied up. She said a quick prayer of thanks and asked for protection. She quietly sat up and put on a t-shirt that was 3 sizes too big for her. That was all they had given her - she had been wearing her wedding dress when they snatched her. She realized how sore and weak she was. She was not sure if she had the strength to make it. But she thought this probably be her only chance and she had to take it and find a way to escape. Jason might let her go, but Willie - he would never let her go - at least not alive. He had proven that today.
At the prosecutor’s office, Andrew met with Peter, “How are you? How can I help you?” Peter said as he greeted Andrew in the lobby. The two exchanged pleasantries and small until they were in Peter’s office.
Once inside with the door closed, Peter filled in Andrew. “Okay. Anthony thinks that they have her at the Lake - the north end. The jet has not been used in 3 months. The FBI sealed the house in Florida just after his arrest a year ago, so they don‘t have access to it.
We can go up to the Lake house, it’s near Field’s Landing, now if you would like. The FBI has one team heading to the house now and another following Jason - he was at the corporate office in Alpharetta - last I heard.”
“That means Emily is probably alone with Willie. Let’s go!” Andrew said jumping up quickly.
“Slow down. We’ll go but first we ne-”
Andrew blurted out before Peter could finish, “You don’t understand. Willie is unpredictable. He is capable of --”
Peter understood. Andrew did not need to finish the statement. “Okay. We can call from the car.”
Once the two were on there way to Field’s Landing, Peter called Anthony. Anthony made the arrangements to make a simultaneous arrest of Jason, Warren and Denise Stephens as soon as Emily was safe. He, also, had phone service to the house and area cellular service disrupted.
It was late afternoon when Andrew and Peter joined Anthony and FBI agents with him behind the lake house.
“You made good time, guys,” Anthony said when Andrew and Peter walked up.
“Have you seen Emily or Willie at the house?” Andrew asked anxiously.
“Well, Willie just went back in the house. He had been sitting on the back porch for about an hour.”
“Excuse me, sir, someone is at the window - the second window from the left.” One of other agents said, interrupting Anthony.
Emily went over to the window. Looking out she saw a line of trees to the north beyond the road and the lake was to the south. Her best chance of escape was making it into those woods. So she tried the window. To her surprise it opened. She eased herself down over the window seal and headed toward the tree line as fast as she could.
“May I?” Andrew asked, pointing at the agent’s binoculars. It was Emily. She was climbing out the window. “It’s her. That’s Emily.” He exclaimed.
“Men go in. I’ll call and have the others picked up.”
Emily made her way across the yard. She was half way there. She had to cross the dirt road and go about 500 yards then she would be out of site in the wooded area. When to her left, she saw headlights speeding down the road. It was Jason’s car. He saw her.
“Who’s that?” Peter yelled seeing the car. “That’s Jason. How did he - He’s spotted Emily!”
“Emily!”
Who had yelled her name? She knew the voice. It was Andrew. She ran faster. But the car was too close. Jason braked hard and jerked the wheel. The car did ‘a 180’ and slammed into Emily. Jason jumped out of the car and grabbed her putting a gun to her head.
“NO-O-O!” Andrew yelled as he stepped out from the tree line.
“FBI. Put the gun down and let her go.” Anthony demanded. He and the other agents began advancing with their weapons drawn.
“Andrew - I know you are out there. You tell them to back off. You just signed her death certificate.” Jason growled, as he pulled her toward the car with him.
“It‘s over Jason. We have Willie, Denise and Mr. Stephens in custody. And the area is surrounded.”
Walking from the tree line, Andrew could tell that Emily had been hurt when the car hit her. She was limping and bleeding heavily from her head. “Jason let her go. She needs medical help. I’ll go with you.” Andrew begged.
“Forget it! Knowing you are responsible for her death will cause you more pain than just killing you. You better tell them to back off now. I can find ways to make her death slow and painful.”
“Do it. You have to back off and let them go.” Andrew said to Anthony, lowering his head in defeat. They did retreat back some. Andrew thought to himself how could he ever have thought this would work. “I’ve lost her.” He cried as the tears flowed.
Peter, pulling Andrew back out of the line of fire, tried to comfort him, “We still have a chance. One of the agents just got into Jason’s car.”
Jason pushed Emily into the car, got in himself and began speeding down the road. As he approached the main road the agent in the back put a gun to Jason’s head, “You are under arrest. Take your foot off the accelerator and pull the car over.”
Jason quickly jerked the car hard and released the passenger door. Emily was flew out the open door before the car rolled. Andrew watched in horror as the car rolled over her.
Andrew took off before anyone could stop him. It seemed to him to take forever to reach her when in reality in took less than a minute. All he could think was there is no way she survived that. The car rolled over her. He had just watched her die and it was his fault.
When he reached her, he was relieved to find she was breathing - it was quite labored but at least she was still alive. He wanted to pick her up but knew it may cause further injury. Anthony arrived and protected her spine and rolled her on her back as they waited for medical help. Anthony called dispatch and requested an air ambulance.
While waiting for the ambulance Andrew gently brushed her hair from her face. He vowed to never let anyone or anything hurt her again. He also prayed earnestly for a miracle. He remembered from his childhood the bible stories about Jesus healing many people like Lazarus, Mary, Jarius’ daughter. He knew Emily would need a miracle from God too.
Once the ground unit arrived, Andrew reluctantly backed off. So the paramedics could begin stabilizing her while awaiting the helicopter. They immobilized her neck and back, started IV’s and bandaged the cuts.
Chapter 11
Waiting for word on Emily at the hospital, Andrew glanced at the 11 o’clock news with Peter and Anthony. They were the headline story.
“The top story tonight involves Warren Stephens. In an operation reminiscent of the mob, the story began with the murder of Ronald Miller just over a year ago. Warren Stephens’s trial was to begin on Thursday with jury selection.
The latest developments began over the weekend, per a press release from the FBI. Andrew Ayers, the prosecution’s key witness, was forced to marry Stephens’s daughter, Denise, instead of his fiancé, Emily Ford, on Saturday. Two of Mr. Stephens’s employees allegedly abducted Ms. Ford during the ceremony. The plan was to force Mr. Ayers to recant his testimony by threatening to kill his fiancé, Ms. Ford. Ayers secretly notified the authorities of the abduction.
This evening police and FBI raided the home of Jason Culpepper near Field’s Landing on Lake Allatoona where Mr. Culpepper and a William Knight were holding Ms Ford. Ms. Ford was seriously injured during the rescue attempt and is reportedly in critical condition. She is currently undergoing emergency surgery at Emory Hospital. Jason Culpepper was killed when he crashed his car trying to escape.
An FBI agent was also injured but the agent’s name and condition were not released. Both Warren and Denise Stephens and William Knight are in federal custody tonight facing multiple charges in conjunction with the abduction and attempted murder of Ms. Ford.
Mr. Ayers could not be reached for comment. A press conference is schedule in the morning at 9:30 according to the press release. Action 10 will be covering it live.”
As the news went on to other stories, Andrew impatiently pacing and said, “What’s keeping them so long? Dr. Mitchell said it would take only an hour or two. It’s been almost 4 hours.” “Just relax. Internal bleeding sometimes takes longer than expected. It doesn’t mean anything is wrong.” Anthony said trying encourage Andrew. Suddenly they heard a commotion in the hallway.
“But, I am Mr. Ayers and Ms. Ford’s pastor.”
“No one is allowed in.” an agent said.
Andrew went to the door and began explaining. “It is okay. I know him. He is our pastor. Please let him come in.”
Keith gave Andrew a long hug. Then Andrew introduced Keith to Peter and Anthony. Keith began, “I was watching TV and heard the news and just had to come over. I figured security would be tight because - I just wanted you to know I am here for you and praying for Emily. You told me Saturday you could not explain and to trust you. I did and have been praying for both of you. I just had no idea it was anything like what you two are going through.”
“Thank you for coming. I wish I could have been more open. I just couldn’t.”
“No need to explain. How is Emily?” Keith continued.
“She is in surgery now. All Dr. Mitchell said before taking her to the OR was that she had some bleeding in the her abdomen that needed repairing - it appeared to be her spleen. The ER nurse did come and say that another doctor was going to join him to repair some broken facial bones.”
“Dr. Mitchell is top notch. He will take good care of her. How are you holding up? ”
“I am hanging on. It has been a long 2 days.” After a pause, Andrew continued, “I saw the crash. I cannot get it out of my head.”
Keith put his hand on Andrew’s arm, “Let’s pray for God to help Emily and soften that memory. Okay?”
As Keith was finishing the prayer, Dr. Mitchell walked into the quiet room looking very weary. Andrew stood and walked over to him and waited for Dr. Mitchell to begin. Andrew could only hold his breath. Peter said, “Well.”
Dr. Mitchell motioned Andrew to sit, then he began, “Emily had more bleeding than we suspected. But she is stable now. With that said though she’s not out of the woods yet.”
“Doc, what exactly are her injuries? What are her chances?” Andrew asked.
“Honestly - Mr. Ayers. It is hard to say at this point. We will know more in 24 hours.” Dr. Mitchell bluntly began, “Besides her spleen, which we removed, she had a tear to her liver that needing repair. She lost a lot blood. We have given her 5 units so far. Because of the large blood loss, she is at risk to develop DIC. That occurs when a patient loses so much blood they lose their blood’s natural ability to clot. We are monitoring very closely.”
Nodding his head, Andrew asked, “What are her other injuries? Can I see her?”
“She has an old bruise on her right temple area. You told me that occurred on Saturday, I believe. The CT scan of her head did not show any bleeding or swelling in her brain - which is a plus - she does have a small hairline fracture of the skull and a concussion. Dr. Edgar, a plastic surgeon, repaired the facial fractures and lacerations to her face. She has several broken ribs which collapsed her right lung. We inserted a chest tube to re-inflate the lung. Her right lower leg was broken and her left shoulder was dislocated. The leg break was not bad. We have splinted it until the swelling goes down at which time we will cast it. And we ‘popped’ her shoulder back in place. She also has a lot of soft tissue injuries.”
“Her spine?” Peter asked.
“The X-rays and CT didn’t reveal any spinal injuries. But with the trauma she has sustained - we will have to wait and see. We don’t want to ’clear’ the spine until she awakens.
I know you were at the scene. But I doubt you were in the right frame of mind to notice. The paramedics reported it to me. All the rain we had over the weekend - saved her from instant death. The ground was so wet - it allowed her to “sink down” when the car rolled over her, otherwise I am certain she would have had fatal crush injuries.”
“God provided a way out.” Andrew murmured.
“What?” Peter asked.
“Sunday, I was thinking about what you said about God had a plan in this. Emily, awhile back, told me that God won’t tempt us beyond what we can bear. And he will provide a way out. I know this wasn’t a temptation and there are better scriptures to support divine deliverance. But it was what came to mind when you were just talking about the rain and mud.” Andrew explained.
Peter agreed, “God was definitely involved. That rain was the clue that led us to Field Landing and softened the soil to cushion the blow of the car. In Psalms, many times David talks about God being his deliverer. Like in 18:2 - ‘The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.’”
“One of my favorites in 16:9-10 - ‘…Therefore my heart is glad…my body also will rest secure, because you will not abandon me to the grave.’ God is there through any and everything with you.” Keith added.
“Andrew, I want you to remember that God is with you and Emily no matter what. There is one more thing I do need to tell you. About her injuries. And I always hate to tell family this --- but it appears she was sexually assaulted.” Dr. Mitchell finished.
“Willie, it had to be him,” Andrew angrily said, “I’m going to kill him!”
“Let the law take care of him.” Keith said.
“Right, Emily needs you now.” Anthony added.
“I want to be with her. Can I go to her now?”
“Let me check.” Dr. Mitchell said then went over to the phone on the wall. When he came back, he said, “They are getting her settled in the unit upstairs. Let’s go on up. By the time we get up there, the nurses should have her ready. I want to prepare you. First, she is on a ventilator to help her breathe.”
“She’s not breathing on her own?” Andrew asked as they headed to the elevator.
“She can, but to help her rest, we have placed her in a drug-induced coma. Because of her injuries - particular to her chest, we are doing as much as we can for her. She needs the extra energy to heal not to struggle to breathe. Okay?”
“That makes sense.”
Dr. Mitchell explained the various tubes and equipment that Andrew would see. They arrived at the ICU. “Are you ready to go in?”
Andrew was anxious to go in but was suddenly nervous. He asked, “Can I touch her?”
“Yes”
“Can she hear me?”
“I believe that unconscious patients can hear what is going on, so talk to her. But keep it positive. Don’t talk about the abduction.”
Noticing the visiting hours posted on the wall by the ICU entrance, Andrew asked, “How long can I stay with her?”
“Stay as long as you like, I will arrange it with the nurses. But remember you need to rest too. When she wakes up is when she will really need you. The nurse here are top-notch and will take good care of her.”
“Thank you, Doctor, but I made a vow that I would never, ever leave her or let anyone hurt her again, if I got her back. Just have them bring in a chair, please.”
“Okay” Dr. Mitchell said, “She is in Room #12, it is at the far end of the unit. Agent Spaulding requested the easiest room to protect.”
Turning to the agent and Peter, Andrew queried, “Why?”
Peter answered, “Stephens is still a threat. I should have insisted on protective custody back when you initially came in after Ron Miller‘s murder. Anthony will have men guarding her and you here while she is in the hospital. Once she is stable enough to travel, you will both go into protective custody.”
Anthony added, “I have a couple of ideas, but we can discuss them in the morning before the press conference. I have a stack of paperwork yet to do. Andrew, you need some time with Emily then some rest. Dr. Mitchell, can we use your office in the morning to meet before the press conference - say, around 9 a.m. We can discuss my plan then.”
They all agreed on the time.
Andrew added as he and Keith walked into the Emily’s room, “And thank you, all of you very much.” Then Anthony and Peter left.
Dr. Mitchell checked Emily briefly and then excused himself saying, “I’ll be at the nursing station if you need me.”
Andrew saw Emily innocently lying there with all the lines and tubes. Keith briefly prayed with him again and left him to be alone with Emily. Andrew walked over to her with tears in his eyes. He hesitantly took her swollen hand. ”Emily, I’m so sorry this happened. I never intended to drag you into this mess. I really did not know they were this dangerous. I am not going to let them hurt you again. I am here for you now and you can’t get rid of me. When you get better I’m going to marry you and we’ll go away. We’ll live where ever you want to?”
Andrew continued, “Emily, I have had a lot of time to think. You were right. God can be a comfort. Over the last few days, I , my life, has felt so out of control. Your talks about God kept coming back to me. Keith, Peter and Dr. Mitchell have also shared with me. I always thought I was a good person and didn’t need religion. This experience it has shown me it is more than just a religion. It is about a real and personal relationship with God. I have seen the peace he has given you. I want that feeling too. I know I have a long way to go and lots to learn but all relationships take time to build.
Sweetie, as my witness, I want to make the good confession. I believe I remember the words. I know God will hear me and accept me as one of His children.”
Then Andrew knelt down on one knee and prayed, “Lord, I am ready to accept you. I believe that Jesus is your Son. I want him to be my Lord and Savior. I am a sinner, please forgive me and accept me into your family.
Lord, I can feel your presence more than ever. I know you are here. Please continue to be with Emily and heal her rapidly. Not for me. She has so much to offer the world. I would grieve for her - greatly. Yet I now can accept whatever your will is for her. If her work is done here, accept her into your loving arms. Amen.”
Andrew got up and sat in the recliner a nurse had brought in. He held on to her hand and finally slept for the first time in four days.
Jessica, came in and gently woke him. After she introduced herself, as the day shift nurse, he asked her, “How is she doing?”
Jessica answered, “she’s improving. For being hit by a car, thrown from a car and then rolled over by a car less than 24 hours ago, she is making miraculous progress.
“Dr. Mitchell was in an hour ago and asked me to wake you at 8 o‘clock. There‘s a change of clothes for you on the table. You can use the residents‘ shower if you like.“ Handing him a VIP badge. “You can use this badge to unlock the door. The shower room is the third door on the right once you leave the unit.”
Andrew looked reluctantly at Jessica then Emily. Sensing his anxiety, she added, “Andrew, I’ll take good care of her but you need to get cleaned up for the press conference. I am not supposed to tell anyone but besides being a nurse, I am also a special agent with the FBI. I’m used undercover in hospital’s for this type of case. She’ll be fine. She’s strong. “ She said as she showed him her ID badge.
He felt better. He smiled and said, “Thank you.” He got up, gave Emily a kiss and went to take a shower. After freshening up, he checked in on her once more. She seemed to be breathing easier. He just wished she didn’t have to go through this. It seemed she didn’t have one part of her that wasn’t bruised, bandaged or scraped. But he knew she would be fine, God was with her and him. He was positive. It would take time but they would be together - God, Emily and him.
Andrew looked at the clock it was already 9:00. He was late. So he hurried done to the first floor for the meeting in Dr. Mitchell’s office. When he walked in, Peter said, “You’re late.”
“Sorry, I lost track of time and then got lost looking for the office.”
“We understand but we don’t have time to discuss the plan with you now. We need to head to the conference room.” Peter said.
Anthony added, “We will not have you answer any questions. We will take care of that. We just want you present.”
“Where’s Dr. Mitchell?”
“Andrew, he got called upstairs about 5 minutes ago. He said he’d meet us at the conference.” Anthony answered.
The three hurried to the conference room which was already packed with news crews. The threesome made there way to the front of the room. Peter opened the news conference by reviewing the case against Stephens and the subsequent kidnapping of Emily Ford. Peter then turned to Anthony to review the rescue mission at the lake house and arrest of others involved. Concluding, Anthony said “.. originally we planned to have Miss Emily Ford’s physician here to give you an update on her condition but -”
At that moment Dr. Mitchell entered the room with a somber look on his face. As he walked to the front of the room, silence fell over the crowd. He looked at Andrew and whispered, “I’m sorry.” Then he took the microphone from Anthony and turned to the audience, “Please excuse my tardiness. I am Dr. Mitchell. I was called to the ICU for an emergency a few minutes ago.”
One of the news reporters shouted out, “What is Ms. Ford’s condition?“
Dr. Mitchell turned again to Andrew and said I am sorry again. Then he proceeded, “I regret to have to inform you that Ms. Ford died just a few minutes ago. The injuries were just too extensive. We did everything we could.”
