GOD’S STEWARD
Doing childhood, I often asked myself what would happen to my things after I died. Maybe they could put my things into the grave with me I thought, but someone could rob my grave. The revelation and understanding that the only thing I would carry with me to my grave were acquired experiences saddened me. I failed to understand I was a steward of God and owned nothing. A steward is someone who maintains someone else’s property and owns nothing. Jesus talked about stewards in the Parable of a Vineyard owner. Matt. 21:33-46. The workers were stewards and did not own the vineyard. They were resentful when the owner of the vineyard requested fruit from “his” vineyard.
People often stand at the grave of a loved one. They are saddened and some openly weep because the loved has departed. Soon after the funeral individuals who once wept begin to consider the things that the departed left behind. Often arguments arise when family members and friends attempt to distribute the loved one’s possessions. Attempts to divide possessions have divided families. As a child I observed such disputes within my family. These disputes divided my family. Some family members continue to converse while others choose not to converse. Approximately 50 years have passed and arguments persist
Individuals who argue about the remains of a loved one fail to comprehend that he was a steward and possessed nothing. They fail to understand they two are stewards. At their death acquired possessions will pass to others who will become stewards over these possessions. The acceptance that I am a steward and not an owner frees me and allows me to begin a new life as I no longer live under false premises. We must never forget we are stewards and God is the owner.
