Racing Past the Window Of Opportunity
Mark 6:48 He saw the disciples straining at the oars, because the wind was against them. About the fourth watch of the night he went out to them, walking on the lake. He was about to pass by them, but when they saw him walking on the lake, they thought he was a ghost.
It was a very cool November morning. As I walked off the main road and onto the small narrow trail that lead up to my box stand. I had to watch my steps very carefully for the little stubs that were left from clearing this path. A path that was cleared by a hand machete, just wide enough to walk down. Upon reaching my box stand I began to climb up into it. Putting my gun up over my shoulder with its strap to keep it from banging on the stand. Once I was inside the stand, I sat down in the comfortable office chair. Placing my gun in the right hand corner. From this position I could see down all of my lanes. ”As a deer hunter, I concentrate all my efforts on my lanes.” These lanes had of course been cleared by a tractor and bush Hogg. Lanes that were at least 15 ft wide and 250 to 300 feet long. Lanes where I had cut down all the unnecessary brush and shrubs. One was to the left of me and one to the right. The lane that was directly in front of me was not that long maybe 100 feet. I had only been their for just a few minutes when it happened. I had just looked up and down all my lanes. Then something caught my attention out of the corner of my left eye. A flash so quickly it was almost ghost like. Here one minute and gone the next. It was a deer a four point or better. He swiftly ran across my left lane. Giving me just enough time to determine that he had horns, horns that glistened in the bright sun light. The problem was I didn’t really get a good look at him. Frankly, just enough to make my mouth water.
Taking some time to muddle over this racing deer, got me to thinking. How many times do I just race past our Lord? With a fleeting thought we yell at our Lord, “Not now Jesus ,maybe in a little while.” “I can’t stop now Lord, I am too busy.” “I have to cook Wednesday night supper, paint nursery and make arrangement for Sunday.” “Can’t you see how busy I am doing all of God’s work. All this stuff is good stuff, but sometimes we need to spend quiet time with the Lord. Stop and smell the roses. Some of us pull the rose off the bush, stick it in our mouth and smell as we go. My time in the deer stand is my time I spend with my Lord. He reveals many wondrous things to me there.
I have always said, ”If I could help one woman avoid the mistakes I’ve made, it would be worth it all. Today the Lord spoke to me and said, “Why just one?” The harvest is plentiful and the laborers are few. I want to help as many women as possible, beginning with you. This is why I write these deer stories.
Dear Lord, open my eyes to see the new places that you and I can just be together. Help me to slow down long enough to hear your voice. Help me to broaden my windows of opportunity, so I can share you with so many others. Help me to step out of my deer stand into the world you died to save.
