TITLE: PREGNANCY REVOLUTION By Julie Andre 09/06/11 |

Outside it was a dark, cold, and gray November morning. My morning ritual began early due to my work schedule. I was a Home Economics teacher at a school located 45 minutes from my house.
As I stood in the mirror attempting to drink my steaming café au lait, I saw for the first time the REALITY. In my hand was a white plastic gadget the size of a thermometer. The lettering was written in bold back letters. OH MY GOSH! God was sending me a gift---a BABY!!!
Little did I know that the war within my body had began. Although my emotions were thrilled, my body had started the rebellion soon called the Pregnancy Revolution. I termed it the P.R. because my body had skipped a period and I was having morning sickness, and constant nausea. Those clues led me to the drugstore shelf evaluating which pregnancy test to buy. The test told the truth.
Explaining to a man about my Pregnancy Revolution was hard and still is difficult to do. One has to feel it to fully understand the complexities of this experience. I too was in the dark about the physical challenges.
My husband did realize the consequences of my mood swings, cravings, sneezing, and nausea. Morning sickness was a constant companion for a long time. Eventually, it became nausea. My teacher’s desk was crowded with peppermints and crackers. I termed my stash as MRE (Meals Ready to Eat.)
Weight gain was not my problem during this hormone ravaged body. In fact, my favorite meal was drinking chocolate milkshakes from whatever ice cream store was available! Café au lait or any caffeine was no longer a staple in my diet. Water which had never been a beverage I enjoyed suddenly became my “best friend”.
In spite of exhaustion and nausea, with God’s grace, I did manage to work until the end of the school year. When driving to school, I would bombard my mind with Christian music, and pray. By the time I arrived at the junior high, I was ready to slowly move my body in the right direction.
During the summer I stayed in the “underground shelter” of my living room laying directly in the front of the air condition. The military strategy was LARGE needlepoint pictures. My warring body did venture with caution to a nearby self frame shop. God was doing for me what I could do not for myself.
A Peace Treaty was signed on August 17, 1983. It came to pass with the arrival of Sarah Esther Da’vid. Joy had arrived in the morning.
The Pregnancy Revolution was officially over…
