TITLE: The Gift By yvonne north 06/27/09 |

AS WE WAIT,
Red dust floats through the open window,
It rests on counters, cups and couches.
Dry water barrels stand in the kitchen crying to be fed.
Vehicles and feet are painted red with Kenyan dirt,
And the slow trek up the hill to my dala, my home, lengthens each day
AS WE WAIT.
It comes.
Eyes turn to the sky.
There, do you see it? Be filled with joy!
Soon, it comes, prepare the welcome!
AS WE WATCH,
The heavens fade from azure, to silver, to gray to black.
Trees whisper to each other, “it comes, it comes.
The announcement bellows across heavens floor
“I COME, I COME, BE READY, I COME!
Sudden silence, and then lights are extinguished and darkness comes
AS WE WATCH.
S-h-h-h it comes.
The tapping begins.
Tapping crescendos to a drum beat on tin roofs.
Children and chickens cackle, shriek and huddle for shelter.
AS WE WORK.
Bright red, blue, yellow buckets and pans, and pails
Stand ready to accept the bountiful gifts of GOD.
Tiny flecks of soft yellow candle light show the rivulets
Leading from the sitting room to the kitchen.
Footprints, and sweating buckets create the path
AS WE WORK.
The dance is long.
Muscles lift and pour, lift and pour.
A well worn, slippery path is followed.
Veranda, Sitting Room, Kitchen; Kitchen, Sitting Room, Veranda.
NOW WE WORSHIP,
The drums fade to tapping, then silence and light returns.
Cats. dogs and chickens venture from their shelters bickering.
Muscles pour the last drops of water into thirsty barrels.
Mama’s stand on verandas smiling at the generous bounty of GOD,
And children find puddles to dance in as
NOW WE WORSHIP.
