Holidays
So here comes another Father’s Day. A day to celebrate all the great memories you share with your father, to reminisce in the special relationship between father and son.
Let’s see . . . what can I say about that relationship? How about the fact that I know almost nothing of the man? About how he is a distant memory that left my mother with four young boys to care for as he became a pioneer for what is now known as ‘deadbeat dads’?
Well, let’s skip past that . . . Lets go to the stepfather who came into my life. The guy that mom married although he hated kids. Good move for a mother with four sons. Do you want to hear about all the times the neighbors called the cops because of the fighting in our house? Should I tell the story of the baseball bat incident that created such havoc that he and my mother moved out, leaving two teenagers to fend for themselves?
Perhaps I should tell you about the relationship between my son and me. About how I have no clue what I am doing and how I simply try not to do what the father figures in my life have done. Should I explain about my stunted emotional growth from being raised by wolves after my folks left, the drug and alcohol abuse, the years of hunger? My low self esteem caused by being unwanted even by my own family?
I could go on about any one of those things. I could be bitter and resentful and probably do sound that way. But I actually will celebrate Father’s Day. I will be joyous when the day comes to celebrate the relationship between my father and me. I will celebrate because the father who has bailed me out of the bad hand I was dealt is our Lord, our Heavenly Father.
He has made me whole, and has made my life bountiful. I still struggle, but He has given me power over the enemy. Struggle does not equal despair, it equates to adventure, to opportunities to see Him at work. He is there for me to lean on in the storm, to carry me when I have no more strength. He is never distant, He always loves me, He guides me in my relationships. He lifts me to worthiness; He refreshes my spirit, cleanses my soul, and always wants me.
I will celebrate with my Father, and I will know that I am blessed beyond words.
