So there we are, close on Midnight, my son and I trying to nail the barn door back together, that the goats had pushed out at dusk.
The sheep are butting me from behind. The goats, six little guys now back inside the barn, are trying to nose the wood out as fast as we replace it.
It is way too dark to see the nails, aside from one flashlight, held by a thirteen year old boy, who would much sooner shine the beam on bugs than a hammer.
So I stopped, looked up at the star studded heavens and asked God for help.

In the distance there are coyotes calling, and moving through the fields looking for easy prey.
'We have to make this good Thomas.'
'I know' he grinned, and in that moment God whispered .............

It no longer mattered that the barn door might again fall apart tomorrow, that I hammered my thumb several times by mistake, or even that I got sampled by a dozen hungry mosquito's. My son had grinned from ear to ear. He was glad to be helping, glad to be needed, and glad to be part of it all.

Sometimes, I look around at all that needs to be done to our little farmyard, I consider perhaps that little trouble free apartment in town might be a whole lot easier.Flip a switch one way for heat, and the other way to stay cool. Usually when I am exhausted and crawling into bed, thinking I must be nuts..........it has much appeal!
Then, I think again, and even at midnight.........especially at midnight, I know just how blessed we really are.

My kids don't have cable T.V., but they get to watch eggs hatching, calves being born, foals taking their first wobbly steps. They know the value of rainfall, to keep the wells full, and how precious water truly is. Firewood in winter time. That we all have to work together, to get things done, keep it all going, make it work.
They are learning to share, and in one heartbeat, what little they think we have becomes great wealth when others around them have nothing.
What lifeskills God can teach them here, and such wonders we daily behold.

Memories being made, stories to retell, just like this one, ' Fixing the barn at midnight.' cherished and wrapped in His Love.
