On Memorial Day 1989, my family received passes to Frontier City amusement park in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Mario, my son, his three year old cousin, Lyn, and myself stood beside a little girl and her grandmother as we waited in line to enter the park. The little girl’s face was full of brown freckles. From behind the crowd came a voice, “She’s got so many freckles! Is she sick or something?”

Immediately, the little girl’s head dropped as tears welled forth then rolled down her creeks. Her grandmother knelt down beside her, “Honey, I just love your freckles!”

“Not me! I hate them!”, she cried.

"Lori, when I was a little girl I wanted freckles”, as she lightly touched her granddaughter’s face. “In fact, freckles are absolutely beautiful works of God!”

“The little girl looked up, “Really , grandma!”

“You bet! Why, just name one thing prettier than freckles.”

The little girl looked into her grandmother’s face, “Wrinkles”, she responded.

That experience remained fixed in my mind ever since that day and how a grandmother responded to someone’s hurtful statement. The moment taught me to look at others as Jesus did—with eyes of mercy and love. If I do so, then I will not see people’s imperfections. I will see only beauty and God’s majesty.

Prayer: Lord help me to find those things beyond what we humans refer to as outward imperfections and find your beauty from within.
