Taking a stand, much less a firm one, is not easy for a sometimes wishy-washy person like myself who would often rather yield than be confrontational. Still, the assignment was given, the challenge made, and the gauntlet thrown down.

I rummaged through a mental list of current hot topics that included everything from women’s rights to oil prices to government overspending, but couldn’t find an issue on which to take a definitive stand due to a serious lack of information on my part.

Switching gears, I rummaged deeper into my mental topics list and found myself heading in a new direction, away from deep social and economic issues into those that could be labeled frivolous while remaining practical.

For instance, it is my opinion that every God created being has the right to stand outside on a clear summer’s evening, humbled as they look upon the Milky Way, awestruck at the sheer magnitude of stars painted on a canvas of deep blue infinity.

It is my opinion that kindness resolves more problems than cruelty and that encouraging words hold more power than empty promises.

I believe that it should be mandatory for children to be loved and for the elderly to be respected.

And finally, it is my humble opinion that every God created being on the face of the earth should be the daily recipient of a hug, a smile, or an encouraging word, with no exceptions for legal holidays!

Well, those are my opinions. They won’t lower tomorrow’s gas prices, won’t stop government waste or nuclear proliferation, but they could make the world a nicer place for at least one more person and wouldn’t it be just great if that “one more person” was YOU!
