Back during the space race in the 1970's, the manned space craft Apollo 13 was on a mission to make the first lunar landing when it had serious electrical and technical difficulties. The pilot communicated with the space center in Houston, uttering those famous words "Houston, we've had a problem", and it was agreed that the mission had to be aborted...The crew, thankfully, made a safe return to earth, but it was not quite the journey the astronauts or the space center in Houston were anticipating...

So how does that relate to us?

Well, say you have been a Christian for a while, but something has changed. Things just are not going right. The vision of what your life was to be like has experienced "technical difficulties", and perhaps you have had to abandon your vision. You might find yourself confused about the direction you are heading. You might be depressed. Life seems flat, two-dimensional. Some call it “losing your joy”.

O.K., let’s go with that idea….. so if you lost it, let’s go find it.

Let’s start in the throne room of your heart. Who is sitting there? If the throne was dusted for fingerprints, would yours be the ones found all over it? Uh-huh, think about it. Have you crept back up there and found yourself trying to take charge of your life again?

If so, step away from the throne! That’s right, I’m talking to you (and me). Abort your plans, and release them to Mission Control. You see, God is the only one truly qualified to be our master, not self. When God is in charge and allowed to reign in all areas of our life, that is when we find true joy. You see, if it is any other way, we are trying to do a job we are not equipped for. Our responsibility is to love and obey God. To serve God, not to BE god.

Think about it. Whatever kind of work you are trained in or skilled at, you probably can do it well. But if you are skilled with design and assembly things, and suddenly you are given a desk job…frustration. If you are a gifted manager, and suddenly sent to be an airplane pilot – disaster. Chefs doing accounting, accountants playing the cello at a symphony – possible, but rare.

The point is, we are not called to be lord. Our lives are not a dress-rehearsal and we are understudy to God.

We have a part to play, and it is important: it is to put God on display through the way we live our lives.

He longs to reach a world that does not know or even care that He is there. He wants us to be transparent so that He can shine through us into the darkness that permeates every area of mankind – from the broken homes to the bankrupt businesses, from the homeless shelters to the people held captive in the sex trade industry. From Wall Street to skid row, He wants to break all kinds of chains of sin and set people free. And we are the messengers.

While we are struggling to repossess the throne, people are lost and dying all around us.

Stop. Look. Listen. Do you hear the cry of humanity?

It is time to get back to being about the Father’s work.
