Larry Lilly's Letter Tuesday April 7, 2009

My comments on the "Triumphal Entry" on yesterday brought forth several comments, one of which I want to share with you. It's from my old friend Mike Pyatt and I hope you will read it and pause and ponder a little at his insightful remarks as to the proper way to use the current Easter Celebration:

"Brother:

When a kid, I remember that Easter meant my mom took me downtown, riding the bus and looking for an "Easter outfit". It was intended for improving my photogenic side-my parents never went to church, but we dressed up, and "Eastered" I guess.

Just Friday last, getting my hair cut in Casper by the 40' ish stylist, she asked what we were going to do for Easter. I paused momentarily and said "Go to church and celebrate the resurrection of Christ." There was a brief moment of silence-and believe me, for her to be silent is a momentous event. We had never mentioned such things in the brief time she has trimmed my thinning locks.

She replied "I haven't heard anyone say that for a long time", and she continued to say that is what it used to mean to her. From there, we talked about how it should apply to our lives. Mostly, I told her how it annoyed me that I was tired of bunnies(not the candy though), but I avoided ranting too much about the true meaning being missed.

My point, my simple, rather direct answer apparently struck a cord with her memory bank. Like Christmas, it is a grand time to speak of His work for us, and what it means to all who will accept it.

Wishing the blessings of His work that is already done."

Like Mike, I have learned that witness is more effective than a rant about holidays. The misnomer "Easter" can be used to take attention away from Babylonian fertility celebrations and emphasize the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, said resurrection being the capstone of the Christian faith. Paul said in 1 Corinthians 15:17

"And if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain; ye are yet in your sins."

The Bible flatly states the resurrection of Christ is essential.
