Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday April 2, 2009

An article in the New York Times by Neil Lewis tells the sordid tale of the prosecutorial team in the case of former longest serving Republican Senator in the United States, Theodore Fulton Stevens.

Time after time during the trial the team ignored judicial orders concerning the withholding of exculpatory evidence and the other day one of the FBI agent witnesses, Chad Joy, admitted "he had witnessed or learned of serious violations of policy, rules, and procedures as well as possible criminal violations." A few days' later 3 members of the team were held in contempt by the judge.

Judge Sullivan asked, "How does the court have confidence that the public integrity section has public integrity?"

Attorney General Eric Holder has ordered the charges against former Sen. Stevens dropped and will forgo any new proceedings against him.

Now, you may ask; "What does this have to do with me and my walk with Jesus?"

Nothing, yet everything. Here's why:

Often in the war against personal evil we seek to overcome evil with more evil, and in many cases we engage in warped thinking to justify such actions. The pastor of a church in Knoxville, TN, Chris Buice, in which a nut case entered and killed several people because they were in a liberal church and he hated liberals, stated:

"The man who brought violence to our church hated Liberals. But in his desire to defeat terrorism he became a terrorist himself."

Often hatred brings about a transformation in a person to begin thinking that the end justifies the means. Ordinary folks, lawyers, policemen, and pastors are NOT exempt from the downward spiral.

Several well trained and respected men and women in the United States Justice department are now paying a high price for, as Judge Sullivan implied; Using unethical means to prosecute a serious ethics case.

Biblically we do NOT overcome evil with evil, but as Paul taught in Romans 12:21"Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good."
