“In Jesus name” That is a phrase that is heard on almost every Christian from one time or another. To most, it is an every day thing in the prayer life of their Christian life. But what does it mean when people speak it. Unfortunately many in the Christian faith do not fully understand what that phrase means in its entirety. It becomes simply something that we say when we pray.
The phrase “In Jesus name “is just that, we are praying in his name, not our own. If we take a real look at the phrase just a little deeper we see the word “In”. The Word of God speaks many times in the Bible about this subject, and is one that truly needs placed at a high level of importance. The Word of God reads in 1 John 2:28; And now, little children, abide in him; that, when he shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before him at his coming. And in John 15:4-7
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in me, and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If a man does not abide in me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you will, and it shall be done for you."
In Jesus is more than a simple phrase it means that we have become like him. We have given everything of ourselves to God, and strive to become “Christ Like” We abide in him. There is a story in the Bible that speaks of a group of men that saw some of the miracles of Paul’ and thought of the phrase “In Jesus name’ as mush like a magical word of sorts, but if we read it in Acts 19: 13-16 But there were also some wandering Jewish exorcists who undertook to invoke the name of Jesus over those who had the evil spirits, saying, "I command you by that Jesus whom Paul preaches."There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jew of high-priestly family, who were doing this. "Jesus I know," the evil spirit answered, "and Paul I have heard of, but who are you? And the man in whom the evil spirit was sprang on two of them, over-mastered them both, and treated them with such violence, that they fled from the house stripped of their clothes and wounded.
As we see this group of men thought they could copy-cat Paul simply by speaking the words, but as we read that is not the case. There is much power in the spoken Word of a true Christian, and that same Christian according to the Word of God has the authority over every demonic force that the enemy can come up with. But only if Christ abides IN him. It is not simply a word, but rather a lifestyle in which we are becoming Christ like. Our thoughts and wants become as him. His desires are our desires. It is when the indwelling of the Holy Spirit within us can manifest itself in our daily walk, how we talk, and the choices we make. When we say “In Jesus Name” it is because Christ lives within us. Abide in him today, and see the miracles you imagine.
