John 14:6 - Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.”
To understand what Jesus means when He claims to be the “truth”, we must understand the rest of His nature. At the very beginning of this same gospel we find that Jesus is called “the Word became flesh” not as some simple force, but also as the second person of the Godhead, as the eternal Son of God and is in fact God Himself. Elsewhere, Scripture says that Jesus is the image of God (Col. 1:15) and the exact representation of His being (Hebrews 1:3). Therefore, everything that God is – in character, power, and nature – the same is Jesus Christ. Does God lie? Of course not! No! Scripture says, “God is not a man (in the fallen sense) that He should lie. (Numbers 23:19)” God has no reason to lie. We lie to avoid what we don’t want or to gain what we do want. God has infinite power and therefore has no reason to lie. Besides this, it is impossible for God to lie for two reasons. 1. it is contrary to His nature. Sin itself is doing that which is contrary to the nature of God. 2. if He were to speak an untruth, the moment He spoke it, it would be true. Scripture says that God, “calls things that are not as though they were. (Romans 4:17)” God created the universe by the words of His mouth and through Jesus Christ.
Since Jesus is in very nature God (Philippians 2:6) and God cannot lie; not only must everything Jesus said be truth, but He Himself is the very essence and representation of truth. For every truth is found only and ultimately within God. Every complete truth in nature is in harmony with the nature of God as His creation. All truth in philosophy, religion, and theology is only true as it is conformed to the nature of God. Therefore, no one who rejects God will ever find whole and complete truth – the kind that sets you free – but will only find parts of the truth, and will misinterpret and misrepresent those parts and lead themselves and others into falsehood, error, and bondage. If we are going to find truth – especially eternal truth – we must come to God. And if we are going to come to God genuinely, we must submit ourselves to the truth as revealed in His word. As Jesus said when praying, “Your word is truth. (John 17:17)”. It is through Jesus, the truth, that we have access to God the Father and to salvation. Knowing this then – that Jesus is truth and speaks only the truth and that the word of God is truth – be careful that is cannot be said of you what Jesus said to some, “If I tell the truth, then why do you not believe Me? The one who comes from God (that is; belongs to God) listens to God’s words! You however, are not from God and that is why you will not listen. (John 8:46-47)”. If you believe that He speaks the truth and if you claim to follow Him, then should you not do everything just as He says? Shouldn’t you follow everything He says and not merely some of it? As Jesus said, “why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord’ and do not do what I say? (Luke 6:46)”.
So then, let us pray: “Lord Jesus, we thank You for speaking to us, for communicating Yourself to us in ways that we can understand; through words and through deeds. We thank You for the message of the gospel and for the complete and inspired Word of God. Lord, You said, “you will know the truth and the truth will set you free. (John 8:32)” and You also told us what that truth is: it is You (John 14;6) and it is Your Word (John 17:17). Help us then to know You and to hide Your word in our hearts (Psalm 119:11) that we might follow You down the path of freedom and into eternal life. Help us to receive Your Word as the truth that it is and help us to obey as we should that we might know and show that we are Yours. Thank You, oh God, that You reveal Yourself to us and invite us to know You by offering us a genuine relationship with You. Help us to love You and pursue You with all our hearts and all that we are. We pray this in Your Name, Jesus, and to the praise of Your glory. Amen!”
