Is it I, Lord? Matthew 26:2-22

I normally like to resolve my poems with an upbeat swing, but with this one it just didn't seem the right thing to do and I left it with the question "Is it I, Lord?" so that we might question our own hearts.

Jesus told the twelve that his final days had come
The Son of Man was to be crucified, yes death to the chosen one
“Truly, I say to you, there’s one who will betray me.”
The twelve became sorrowful and thought how could this be
Each one questioned Christ, not sure of his own heart
“Is it I, Lord? Surely not I.”, then Judas did depart.

The Chief Priests and the Elders had decided that Christ must die
So as not to stir the people they wanted to do it on the sly.
They knew that in order to pull this off it would take quite a plan
For what they’d seen of Jesus, he was no ordinary man.

Yes Judas did betray the Savior, he kissed him as a sign
Gave him up for 30 pieces, then passed him down the line
But he was not alone that night whose faith was wavering
Another couldn’t bring himself to defend the King of Kings
Three times Peter did deny, denied that they’d ever met
And when the rooster crowed, Peter broke down and he wept.

Is it I, Lord? Surely not I.
Would I betray the Son of God
Would I three times deny
Would I on the name of Jesus trod
Would I your life belie
Would I be seen as a fraud
Is it I, Lord? Surely not I.

But I am betraying God’s own Son by denying Him before my friends
And when His name is slandered why do I not defend
I laugh and join in all the jokes and do not turn away
And when two or more are gathered why do I fail to pray.
God’s Holy Word sits on a shelf so rarely to be read
My time’s spent watching tv and the internet instead.

Is it I, Lord? Surely not I.
Would I betray the Son of God?
Would I three times deny
Would I on the name of Jesus trod
Would I your life belie
Would I be seen as a fraud
Is it I, Lord? Surely not I.

I truly pray that everyone reads this and God forgive me , i fall into this in more than one place. Fill us up Lord because it will take You in me , not just me to stand up to this test ! POWERFUL article and yes, i think its the age old question and now is the time to examine ourselves !
