Fast food restaurants came on the scene in the 1960’s. Customers packed the parking lots, eager to get inexpensive meals away from home. The restaurant owners prided themselves in speedy, friendly service. Their founders would not be pleased with the standard operation today. We stand in long lines to order, then wait and wait… If we are in a hurry we know going there to eat may be something we will regret. If we do go, place our order, and wait for our meal, another problem arises. Usually while we are at the sales counter 1 or 2 customers come with frustrations about not getting their order right!
Enough of my complaints! Now, I want to say something they do right; most fast food restaurants offer self serve fountain drinks. You are able to go back as often as you like for free refills! In most regular restaurants drinks are expensive and you pay for extra. Yes, free refills are a big bonus for customers.
The children of God are indwelled by His Holy Spirit. If He had a resume some things He could include are: teacher, counselor, comforter, convicts of sin, brings words of Jesus to our memory, prays for us and through us, gives power to live for Christ and overcome sin, makes us adequate for ministries God leads us to, refreshes and restores us and to wrap it up, much, much more! Aren’t you glad God does not expect you to handle things on your own? Yes, we need His Holy Spirit; and we can rely on Him.
Remember the refills? We are commanded to be filled with the Holy Spirit. “And do not get drunk with wine for that is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit (Ephesians 5:18 NAS).” His Holy Spirit enters our life when we invite Jesus into our hearts as Savior and Lord. As we look at many of the functions of the Spirit it is easy to see how much work He does in and through us! We are compared to your common garden hose. It is connected to a faucet, which is turned on at the handle; then the hose fills with water. What happens next? We use water flowing from the hose to spray on garden, lawns, or to wash the family vehicle. We need to allow the Holy Spirit to flow through us to others. When we do, we will need regular refills! There is no long waiting line and yes, the refills are free!
