Faith
Reading the story of the near-sacrifice of Isaac can be exhausting. We can almost feel the crushing weight on Abraham’s heart as he and Isaac walked toward Moriah. “It took so long for Isaac to arrive. Why would God demand my son’s life? Did I understand Him clearly? This is what the pagans do. We could just turn around and who would know? I want my son more than anything else in the world. Cain killed Abel and it was wrong.” Did any of these thoughts pass through Abraham’s mind? Perhaps, but when the moment came, every one of them was trumped by his faith.
WHAT WAS HIS FAITH? “Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen”. (Hebrews 11:1) Abraham saw no offspring as numerous as stars in the sky, but it was his conviction that it would be so.
WHERE DOES FAITH COME FROM? “Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith”. (Hebrews 12:2)
WHO HAS FAITH? “God has dealt to each one a measure of faith.” (Romans 12:3) This is every one of His followers.
HOW IMPORTANT IS FAITH? , “ ... a man is justified by faith.” (Romans 3:28) Justification (salvation) is the most important thing that could happen to you. “But without faith it is impossible to please God.” (Hebrews 11:6)
WHAT ABOUT THOSE WHO ARE WEAK IN FAITH? “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, 'Move from here to there' and it will move.” (Matthew 17:20)
ARE THOSE WEAK IN FAITH WELCOME IN THE CHURCH? “Receive one who is weak in the faith.” (Romans 14:1)
IS FAITH LOGICAL? No. It is beyond the abilities of human logic to fully grasp the spiritual nature of God and the faith He gives us. We can understand and agree with the facts from the Bible, but this is not faith. Faith is not taught or learned, it is given.
HOW DOES FAITH INCREASE? “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God” (Romans 10:17)
WHAT SHOULD I DO NEXT? “The just shall live by faith” (Romans 1:17). Put your faith into action and do something for God. You have the power to make visible what is invisible.
