Apologetics
First of all, God doesn't send us to hell, we send ourselves there. God has given us a way out through his Son Jesus Christ, but many of us refuse to accept this. Habakkuk states that " O God, you are of purer eyes and cannot behold evil" (Habakkuk 1:13).
God is so perfect that his nature is diametrically opposed to sin.
If a human judge were faced with a child molester and decided to show mercy instead of sending him to prison, would we consider this judge to be loving or corrupt. Would we question the love of a judge that would send this person to prison.
If a human judge, who can be corrupt, can punish a crime, how much more should God who cannot be corrupted punish sin. God cannot by his very nature allow sin to go unanswered, because if he did, he would be corrupt and not loving.
Because of our liberal, morally relativistic society, some of us misconstrue permissiveness for mercy. What it is rather is a sinful society that does not want to be held accountable for its sin.
As far as mercy. What could be more merciful than sending your only Son out of the safety and richness of heaven to live amongst mankind, be met with hostility, ultimately tortured and killed to offer the world a way out of hell. God was not required to do this in any way, but because "God so loved the world, he gave his only Son,that whomsoever believes on him should not perish but have everlasting life" (John 3:16) God could have washed his hands of us and said "Why should I care? they are worms!" But this also is diametrically opposed God's nature.
But some of us are so in love with our sin, that we refuse God's gift of salvation. Since we don't allow Jesus to pay our fine by trusting in his death, we must face the consequence of our sin which according to scripture is spiritual death.
It is because God is loving, that he sacrificed his beloved Son to save us rather than permit our sin to go unanswered.
Isn't it strange. The same people who ask How could a loving God send people to hell? Are the same people who disbelieve in the existence of God because, they perceive, that he allows murder, disease, war, rape, etc. Think about it! God has given us a way, we have to choose it.
