Luke 1:46-55 – The Candle of Glory
Key Verses:(NRSV)
- 47: “My soul magnifies the Lord.” – This poetic strain provides us with a clear sense of the magnitude of Mary’s joy. Nothing could be greater than this feeling.
- 48: “for He has looked with favor on the lowliness of His servant.” – Being an unmarried, pregnant woman in poverty was about as low as it could get. Yet, Mary considered her situation a gift from God.
- 50: “His mercy is for those who fear Him.” – With this verse, Mary is turning her song from an individual reflection to an outward vision. It is the righteous, when they look and turn to God, who become the object of His love.
- 51: “…He has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts.” – The proud are scattered and the powerful are brought down by the humbling nature of God because their pride separates them from God.
- 53: “He has filled the hungry with good things.” – The lowly, hungry, and out-cast are filled by His glory.
- 55: “according to the promise He made to our ancestors.” – This is a reference to the covenant of Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3. “I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you, and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.”

Promise of the Gospel:
Mary's hymn expresses praise to God for His treatment of her, but then extends her praise to how God has treated the righteous throughout the ages and how He will justify them fully in the future. Understanding what God is doing, Mary explodes into a song of joy. God is worthy of praise for how He takes care of His own. Understanding God's glory; that He cares personally for us and acts on our behalf, not only moves the believer to joy and appreciation, but also, spurs us into action to become the blessing we are called to be.
For this fourth week in Advent, we light the Candle of Glory.
