Larry Lilly's Letter Monday February 23, 2009

I often write about the loneliness of standing for truth in times of mass departure from truth even to the point of wondering if there is truth and still others forcefully asserting there is no truth, everything depends.

When society, even religious society takes this agnostic attitude about truth, it is only sensible that whomsoever asserts that truth is real and timeless, only falsely assumed "truth" can change, that person will become a pariah, and a target of ridicule among other things.

Jules Renard stated it well when he wrote back in the early 1900 hundred's:

"If you are afraid of being lonely, don't try to be right."

Being right, even with a good attitude, which is almost as rare as being right, will produce a reaction from some who refuse to believe there is such a thing as truth, those who cling to a tradition that has no foundation in truth or those who see the wisdom of the truth, yet refuse to pay the price of change from formerly assumed truth to line up with the truth.

Many pastors across America are aligning themselves with what is being called, "the emergent church" which emphasizes that doctrinal truth is unimportant at best and at the worst is suspect as to whether or not it is true. Feeling good about yourself is the greatest truth is the idea. One man's followers state, "The success of his church proves beyond question the validity thereof."

A wise person would never use such asinine arguments as no matter whom you follow or with which group you align yourself, there is another with totally different ideas that has a larger following. Read carefully the following statement:

"His success alone proved that I should subordinate myself to this man."

I submit that we must follow the truth of Jesus Christ and be very studious as to just what that truth is and means. Not only in the religious arena, but in all areas of life, be they economical, social or especially political.

The phrase, "his success alone" as the reason for being subordinate to a man, is scary, as the man referred to was the most successful man, for a while, in the history of his country. The quote is from Adolph Eichmann at his trail concerning why he blindly followed Adolph Hitler in the extermination of multiplied millions. Success alone!! How many folks in our day are on the verge of Kool aide cocktails due to blindly following a Hitler or Jim Jones?

The prophet Isaiah wrote: "To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them." Isaiah 8:20
