Children love the adventure of being taken places with their grandparents or other relatives. If they come from a large family the treat of going alone, without brothers or sisters makes it even better.

I was a middle child of five children and I remember one outing with Grandma and Grandpa. She had years of health problems and did not get out very often. Because of that Grandpa did most of the shopping, at Loblaw's Grocery, I believe. They had a chain of stores in central New York State. This time it was the three of us in their Chrysler New Yorker. I felt very small in the big back seat all by myself, like being chauffeured! Our destination was a large shopping center about thirty minutes away. Only one thing stands out in my memory from that day. They let me pick out a ring! It was from a large selection in a Woolworth's or Grant's display. It was not expensive, but very nice. It seems like it was sterling silver with an imitation stone in a lovely setting. It was like The Hope Diamond to me! I was on cloud nine and thrilled to wear it on my hand.

We cannot buy everything a child asks for, but there are times when they need a little extra something. Be sensitive to know what that may be. Who knows, it might be a real keeper!
