Short Stories
I snuggled into my mother's womb, it was a warm, comfortable place to be. I was due to be born in one month and lots of changes were taking place, it was a very exciting time! My brain was working, my lungs were functioning, I could see light, I could hear my mother, and I could feel things. I liked it in there, but knew in my little heart that things would be even better once I was born.
I had heard my mother telling people that things with my father weren't working out, he was still drinking and doing drugs. She was scared, I could tell because her heart beat faster when she talked about him. I tried to calm her by kicking and pushing on her uterine wall. She gently rubbed where my hand or foot pressed and I heard her giggle, at first. As time wore on the more I kicked and pushed the more she cried.
One day her heart was beating very fast and her body shook with sobs, I knew something was wrong. I heard her mother telling her that everything would be okay and she would drive her to the hospital. I had heard of this place before, it was where I was to be born.
'Yeah!' I thought, 'Today is going to be my birthday, I'll finally get to see the world and enjoy that beautiful I catch glimpses of through Mother's tummy.'
When we got there I heard lots of people talking, but I was too excited to listen. I was going to be born today! I imagined my mother's face, how happy she must be knowing she would finally meet her beautiful daughter. I got so excited that I began hiccuping! Soon I would be born and would hear my mother's name she must have chosen for me by now.
My mother climbed up on a table and I heard a kind, gentle woman's voice say, "Spread your legs for me, honey."
Mother did and then was given something that made me feel funny, but I could still hear and feel everything. Something was pressed to my mother's tummy and I heard the woman say, "Okay, there it is. Relax as best you can, honey. That medicine should help."
The next thing I felt my legs being grabbed roughly as they were jerked from my mother's body. I was started and cried out, this wasn't what I expected being born would feel like. Then a pair of sharp scissors were thrust into my skull and oh how I cried! Still, no one heard me because my head was still inside my mother. I hoped the torture was over, but then a tube was inserted into the hole in my head. The last thing I remember is hearing a sucking sound, then my suffering was over.
The world I thought would be full of light had suddenly become dark and cold. I lay on the metal table, twitching for a moment or two, then I saw a great light. There before me stood a great man in long, snow white robes. He had kind, gentle eyes and he was crying. He took me into His arms and I knew He was my Creator.
"I am sorry this has been done to you," He said, "I wish people would see all life is sacred and precious. Even an unborn baby can feel, hear, and see. How awful it must have been to see those scissors coming towards you, unable to stop them, not knowing what they were going to do to you. I love you, but your mother has free will and there was nothing I could do to stop her."
I looked up at Him and asked, "Am I the only one?"
More tears flowed from His eyes, "I only wish you were," He stepped to the side and waved His hand, there were millions of children standing there, "All of these, too, were murdered by their mothers before they had the chance to be born."
I began to cry, "Why? Doesn't anyone want us?"
"There are many families who can not have children who would have adopted each and every one of you and given you good homes. Your mothers decided she would rather you be dead than have a happy life with another family."
"Surely my mother will bury me, though."
"No, you'll be discarded like dead tissue from an operation. No one will mourn your death, no one will say what a good child you could have been, there will be no grave for loved ones to visit. It will be as if you never existed."
