Sodom and Gomorrah: No More

THIS PIECE HAS YET TO BE REVISED AND EDITED. I HAVE JUST COME BACK - MAY 4, 2007. IT HAS BEEN AWHILE SINCE I WAS HERE AND NOW THAT I AM, I FEEL THAT I AM READY TO COMPLETE THIS ARTICLE AFTER SOME EXTENDED HARDSHIPS I HAVE HAD TO ENDURE.


Most people know the story of Sodom and Gomorrah. It tells the story of Lot, his wife, and their two daughters. Angels of the Lord came to Lot and told him to leave the city of Sodom and to not look back because they were going to destroy it and Gomorrah because of their sins. As the Lord was doing His business destroying the sins of Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot’s wife looked back and turned to a pillar of salt. I think we all have our own Sodom and Gomorrah and we are to turn from them and not look back. Whether it is lying, gambling, alcohol and drugs, or something else, we need to let God do His work in our lives; we need to let Him destroy the Sodom and Gomorrah inside of us. Everyone’s Sodom and Gomorrah is different, and God will destroy them, but the person needs to be ready to turn away from them and not look back. Most of my life was looking back at the things I have done or said, or the things that happened to me as a child, or the things I did as a child. The destroying of my Sodom and Gomorrah began a long time ago, but I did not pay attention to the signs God was giving me, until recently. While having a discussion with the Lord, he revealed to me that I had become a pillar of salt because I looked back and was still looking back. He said it is time to turn around and stop looking in the direction of the destruction and look forward to the freedoms and peace that come with the eradication of iniquity. Whether it is the little things of the day or something that happened a year ago, or even 20 years ago, it is imperative that a combination of prayer and self searching are maintained to identify the problem areas that need to be shattered from memory and reality. In order to make the required changes we all need a starting point to begin our new journeys in hope and life.

The first and foremost are the desire to change and the motivation to make it happen, something I never had much of and still have a hard time maintaining at times, but maybe by the end of this article I will have a stronger yearning and be more devoted to the changes that need to made in my own personal journey. Desire, defined by Dictionary.com, is to wish or long for, want, and motivation, also defined by Dictionary.com, is the act or process of motivating, or the state of being motivated. If we long for or desire something enough, does it not give us enough motivation to take action? Every time I have longed for something, I never took action to acquire it. Action, in this case, requires the sense of will for something we want and can obtain with a little effort. If a person was to allow God in their life and let Him be the forefront of their journey they can get through the most difficult battles in life. Overcoming a difficult obstacle, such as alcohol, is not an easy task for many people, but that does not mean that it will not happen. A person can go through all types of counseling, treatments, and support, but they do not necessarily bring to an end for all, this dilemma which people are seeking resolution for. How then do we bring an end to this particular situation? The person must want this affliction removed for good and action must be taken on the part of the person. Through prayer, going to church, and socializing with people who know God, such as a pastor, the healing will begin. Giving things over to God is not a simple undertaking, but with a little effort to know God it will make the biggest difference in a persons life. God can and will remove this hardship if a person simply lets Him in to their heart. Giving up for many is a hard thing to do, but it is a necessity in order to deal with the loss of something a person has grown accustom to. The void where alcohol used to be must be filled with something and there is nothing better than God, who brings peace, hope, love, and a new life without alcohol. There is no better counseling than church, there are no better support groups than socializing with church members, and there is no better treatment than giving it over to God who will remove it forever. A person simply needs to go to church, pray, and make some healthy relationships.

An individual must be impelled to make an effort in their healing. The motivation to eradicate the problem areas that cause many people to continue going out and getting drunk is a serious problem for many. The painful realities that need to be addressed hold people back from doing what needs to be done to obtain freedom, so there is no motivation to change. Where can one find the motivation? In many cases the motivation does not come until people have lost all hope, but not in all cases, because many feel that there is no other way except through death. Those people were right, but they were not suppose to take their lives, they were suppose put to death their old life and ways of living and begin anew with God. They gave up, but they did not give it up, which would have made all the difference in their lives.
