As we approach a new year it is with expectation and excitement of new beginnings, similar to the experiences of a new baby. A baby’s first smile, first laugh, first word, and first step are all met with wonder and excitement. We watch in anticipation as our child moves on to the next phase. These precious experiences are all physical.

As parents, we can experience our child’s spiritual firsts as well, such as their first prayer. One ordinary day became extraordinary when my child asked me to pray to have Jesus into her heart. This prayer was unexpected at her early age of three, but so are the many beautiful expressions of our God. As she prayed I wondered how privileged I am as her mother to be able to lead her in this monumental step of faith. Later in my adult faith, I wondered how much was real in my child’s mind. Even now, she continues to astound me as she shows her faith is real in the depth of her prayers and her actions. As she shares her faith, it encourages me to grow in my faith.

As we experience the new beginnings of a baby, we need to not overlook the spiritual, as they are just as thrilling, if not more, than the physical new beginnings.
Our God gave us the wonderful gift of a child to help them learn, and also to help us learn from them. We can experience new beginnings in our faith, as He our Heavenly Father teaches us to grow in our child-like faith. Just as we cherish and look forward to new beginnings with our child, He looks on with anticipation at our new beginnings with Him.
