Psalm 17:6-8 – “I call to You, God, and You answer me. Listen to me now, and hear what I say. Your love is wonderful. By Your power You save those who trust in You. Protect me…hide me under the shadow of Your wings.”
How amazing it is that God hears us and answers us. He is a God who is near. He is not a God who is far off (Jeremiah 23:23), who can’t be reached or can’t be moved. He is not an idol made of stone or gold, made by human hands – unable to think, speak, or act (Isaiah 45:20). No, our God is the true and living God (Jeremiah 10:10, Daniel 6:26, Acts 14:15, et. al.). He is the One who made heaven and earth (Nehemiah 9:6, Acts 17:24, Revelation 14:7, et. al.), He made our mouths (Exodus 4:11) and our hearts. He is the One who loves us so much that He became one of us, walked among us, and died for us. He is “a man of sorrows” (Isaiah 53:3) and not unsympathetic with us (Hebrews 4:15). This is the God who rescues all those who hope in Him. He saves us from ourselves and protects us from the enemy of our souls. He unites us to Him and our life is hidden with Christ in God (Col. 3:3). He is the Lord almighty and though sometimes it seems like He doesn’t come through for us in the way that we would like Him to, if we belong to Him – if we trust Him and follow Him – we can be sure that everything will work out in the end. Though sometimes He may not deliver us from something, He will always deliver us through everything. As Scripture says, “We know that God works everything together for the good of those who love Him and have been called by Him.” (Romans 8:28). We can be sure that He is always with us, holding us tight, as Scripture says, “He is close to the brokenhearted.” (Psalm 34:18). Oh, for the day when we will see all the amazing ways that He has intervened in our lives and we didn’t even know it.
May we pray, “Our amazing, almighty God – who is man that You should be mindful of him? (Psalm 8:4). But You are mindful of us. If we were to count how many are Your thoughts of us, they would outnumber the grains of sand (Psalm 139:17-18). Help is to remember that You are not a distant god, but You live with us and in us, as we are Yours. Thank You for loving us so much that You would come and die to rescue us so that we could be with You forever. Thank You for watching over us, even when it doesn’t seem like You do. Teach us how to trust and rest in You. Help us to follow You every day of our lives. Amen.”
