Jesus spoke the parable of the Chief Seats to the Pharisees and lawyers because He had observed that they chose the best places to sit, not having any regard for others.

Jesus said that when you are invited to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place because one more honorable than you may be invited by the host. The host may request that you give up your seat to the more honorable guest. You would then be shamed to have to take the lowest place.

Jesus told those who were invited to a feast, to sit down at the lowest place, so that when the host sees you, he may tell you to move up higher. You will then have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you.

If you humble yourself, you can receive glory, but if you to glorify yourself, you will be humbled. We are to humble ourselves as a little child. Whoever does this is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven (Matt. 18:4).

As an act of humility to His disciples, Jesus humbled Himself after He and the disciples had eaten the last supper, by washing the feet of the disciples. Jesus told them that they were to do as He had done for them, humble themselves. Jesus said that a servant is not greater than his master, nor is one greater than the one who sent him. We are not too good to humble ourselves. If Jesus can do what He did, I know I should also, because I am not greater than Jesus.

Jesus also teaches that we are not to invite people to dinner who are able to repay us or invite us to dinner: our brothers, friends, relatives, rich neighbors. We are not to give in order to expect to get. We are to invite the poor, the crippled, the blind, and the lame. When we do this, we will be blessed because they cannot repay. We shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.

Whoever exalts himself will be humbled and whoever humbles himself will be exalted (Luke 14:11).
