Where do we find the power to trust our choices? We are tested in our doubt, but we are limited only by how much we indulge that doubt. Some people have a hard time getting onto elevators or bridges because of their doubt. We can trust that the cables will hold our weight though we have not tested them because that is the truth about steel cables. It is our knowledge of the truth that allows us to act with confidence.

We saw in the last lesson that there is no need to worry because from where the Lord sits, nothing goes unnoticed (Lk 12:6-7). We have already learned to trust earthly truth, and now we are about to get a lesson about a higher truth and a different kind of trust.





12. Only Truth has Power

Help us Lord, there are few left who know the truth or care to look for it. Our enemies boast and flatter all the time, they lie to each other out of habit even when the truth would serve them better. The Lord will cut them off.

They think their power comes from themselves: that they can gain from the oppression of the needy with no thought of justice. But real power is in the word of truth, pure and refined it lasts forever. It holds us safe though we are surrounded by the worst of men.





What is our responsibility to the truth? If nothing else, we must at least look for it; even if it seems we are the only ones who care. Lesson nine said that the enemies of the truth would be destroyed and even their cities would be forgotten. This lesson says they lie to each other even when the truth would serve them better. We can almost understand why a person would lie if he thought it would gain him something, but to lie out of habit when it causes loss is crazy. For some, to stop lying would mean to stop speaking. We must learn to trust the truth, but what does that mean?

We cannot always tell what is the truth, but we can look for it and act upon what we find. We would not cross a busy street without looking both ways because of the reality of the danger, but we would lie to ourselves and each other all the time if it seemed harmless. It may be only flattery or social convention not meant to gain by injury but even the harmless intention can cause dreadful consequences. Truth is knowledge in action (Jn 3:20-21). In these lessons we are learning to be diligent about our habits.

Those who seek earthly power do what they dare to get it, regardless of the cost to themselves and others. Those who seek the truth are protected by its purity, and real power comes to them naturally. This is big and important news to us, the truth we seek will hold us safe because it comes from a higher source than ourselves. It is a living God we seek and his truth will give us life.
