There's no denying it: Winter is here. The weather is cold and the trees are bare. The earth slumbers as we prepare to celebrate the season of light. I have always thought it appropriate that Christmas is close to the winter solstice. What better way to celebrate the arrival of the greatest light the world has known?

I heard somebody say Christmas is for kids. This is not true. Christ came for everybody! He came into this imperfect world so we can have eternal life. That might not improve the decor of planet Earth, but it gives us what we need most: Hope. Hope that something better lies ahead. Hope for a better future than the world can offer. Hope that what we see is not all there is. Where there's life, there's hope. If you woke up this morning there is hope for a better tomorrow, no matter how bad things look now.

Be of good cheer. The world might look gloomy, but that is deceptive. Many blessings lie hidden in the darkness, and faith gives us the light to find them. We have Jesus, and that is all we really need. If you have anything else in life that you hold dear, count it a blessing and be thankful for it every day.

Let us cling to that hope not only during the holidays, but through the whole year. It will sustain us once the meal is cooked, the presents are unwrapped, the china is washed, the guests leave, and the strains of carols fade into the hum of everyday living.
