The Prescription

Air Force Major Brian Whitehorse, a physician, nearly ran through the hospital on his way to visit Abdulrahman A. Abdulrahman—an Iraqi he befriended while serving as a medical doctor in Baghdad. Mr. Abdulrahman was not doing very well following his hip replacement surgery a month earlier. There was talk among the medical team that Mr. Abdulrahman may never walk again on his on.
When Major Whitehorse arrived at his room, he found it empty. He was informed that he had gone to physical therapy. As the Major waited, he noticed a hand written 3 X 5 card taped to the medical table next to Mr. Abdulrahman’s bed. On the card was written:
Three times daily—
1. Yield yourself to the healing power of Almighty God.
2. Imagine yourself walking even though it is painful.
3. Never listen to naysayers or anything negative.
4. Be cheerful and kind to all who visit you.
5. Give thanks to Almighty God for He is Good.
On his return, Major Whitehorse asked him about his list.
“Dr. Whitehorse, you gave me a list of everything I needed to do to get better and be able to walk again,” he said with a big smile on his face. “That is a medical explanation and prescription for getting better. But your list left a few things out. Besides a medical list, one needs a spiritual list as well. We Iraqis rely on the power of God to heal us when we hurt. We know His power.” Within two months, Mr. Abdulrahman was walking well with the assistance of a cane. In roughly a year the cane was gone as well.
Mr. Abdulrahman went on to do very well. No one would have ever thought that he had hip replacement surgery unless they were told of it. His comments reminded Major Whitehorse how intertwined the mind, body and spirit actually are and how deeply they truly affect one another. Since meeting Mr. Abdulrahman, Major Whitehorse, with his permission, made up a copy of his prescription for good medical healing then posted them in his office and in his heart and mind.
