I was used to having trouble follow me wherever I went. I had difficulties most of my life, so I spotted trouble from afar. Trouble was on my mind all the time. It was in my thinking. It was in my heart.
In Matthew 12:34, Jesus says "O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouths speaketh."
Trouble was in my heart because I meditated on trouble. Once it penetrated my heart, it came out my mouth.
Instead Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:33, "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
What does "seek ye first the kingdom of God" mean? I thought for years that this meant that I was to talk to God every day and wait on my knees for an answer. And don't get me wrong, that is a great habit to get into. More of us should do that. However, "seek ye first the kingdom of God" simply means striving to do things God's way.
God warns in Isaiah 55:8-9 "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."
So how do we think like God? How do we do things like God? It requires getting to know how God thinks and how God acts. The only way to do that is to spend time with Him. You can do that through prayer, yes. And you can also do that through studying God’s Word–the Bible.
If your loved one, say a parent or a dear friend, graduated to Heaven and left a stack of letters behind for you, what would you do? You would read them carefully over and over again. You would cherish them and give them a place of honor.
But we don’t do that with the Bible. Instead we lay it on the table, let it collect dust and only tote it to church once or twice a week. Then we wonder why we don’t have a solid relationship with the Father.
John 1:1 states “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
The Word was God. That means that when you read the Bible, friend, you are reading the very thoughts and purposes of God.
When trouble comes now, I go to the Bible and find a Scripture that applies to my situation. I think about that passage. I speak it aloud when I am alone. I say to myself all day long until it penetrates my heart. As soon as it does, I know my answer is on the way. I have the confidence that God will do what His Word promises. We have His Word on it. And that’s a promise you can take to the bank.
