The 23rd Time

Shepherd: We've been over some rough terrain, haven't we?

Sheep: Yes. We have.(That's a bloomin' understatement.)

Shepherd: Remember that day you fell into the ravine?

Sheep: Yes. I do.(Trying to forget, thanks very much).

Shepherd: I climbed down and grabbed you and pulled you back from the edge. By the ears wasn't it? My staff caught you under the neck.

Sheep: Yes. I was stuck, in the thorns.(Ripped the skin off ,actually).

Shepherd: It was those thorns that kept you from charging over the cliff. It took two years for those scars to fade, didn't it? (smiling)

Sheep: Yes. It did. (Not funny at all, really).

Shepherd:I ripped my clothes and tore my skin too, right down to the bone. Then I broke my leg.Pulled my shoulder right out of its socket. I still have those scars. See? Here.Here.(points to scars)
Brrrr...we sat out on that terrible rock face for two days and nights. Didn't we? Freezing rain. Just you and me. Waiting.

Sheep: I was terrified. (Funny, I don't remember the freezing rain.)

Shepherd: Remember the sun though-that sunrise? Wasn't it gorgeous? And then I found that little spring.

Sheep: Yes. You did.(More of a trickle, really).
Shepherd: And I found those sweet tufts of grass, right in the crevices of the cliff?

Sheep: Yes. You did.

Shepherd:I loved holding you so close. Protecting you there. You're eyes were so tightly shut and your body was so cold. I had to get you out of there. I knew once the rain stopped I'd be able to clamber up and bring you home. And I did. Didn't I?

Sheep: Hmmmmm...

Shepherd: Bring you home.

Sheep:Yes. You did.
