Lamb Before Lamb

As I lay curled up in freshly strewn straw
I can hear her heart beating softly in my ears
Its steady, certain, sound, is comforting to me
Everything is fresh and new
It could easily be frightening
After all, it was days ago so few, that in my lungs first breath I drew
But I feel safe, secure in here
Warm and dry now without fear
And everything seems somehow familiar
Like I must belong
But there is something missing
And there is something extra
There are strange ones in the stable tonight

And I, a witness to these things, be
Mine eyes this miracle they see

The others are staying outside this even
Missing once again
In the morning, at dawn of first light
They will run through the meadows and across the fields
The hills will feel the caress of their feet
As they flow over the sparse landscape like drifting balls of cotton
I am left, with the strange ones that now share my space
There is a sense of anticipation in the air
Something is definitely happening over there
Another lamb is being born tonight
The stranger’s lamb before first light

And I, a witness to these things, be
Mine eyes this miracle they see

I ask myself “Will He look like me?”
As mine is, will His purpose be?
His mother’s cry now fills the air
He has been born, a lamb child in the world
Born that their kin He may be
That He might earn the right to redeem them, the lost possession
A treasure He sees them as
A pearl of great price
By faith they will come to Him
In love He will take them in
Then for them to be born again

And I, a witness to these things, be
Mine eyes this miracle they see

I know not where these thoughts be from
Through centuries henceforth to come
This day will then ere be declared
As love of maker came not spared
In form of son, the lamb child born, with purpose same as I
That in their place and for their scorn He too my brother lamb may die
The payment made for you, not I
As mankind’s savior hear His cry
This lamb be blessed here now to view, the Christmas gift, God’s love to you
For the perfect lamb child’s life be given
That faithful men may be forgiven

And I, a witness to these things, be
Mine eyes this miracle they see
