Psalm 56:3-4 – “When I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust, I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?”

Fear comes upon all of us at different times, and for different reasons. The “what if”s” of life threaten to paralyze us drown us in a sea of despair. It is in that moment that we must turn our eyes to God and say, “I trust You.” Our God is in control of everything – even the things that worry you – and He has promised to be with us (Matt. 28:20), to take care of us (Psalms 55:2, 127:2, 145:9, ), and - when bad things happen - to work everything for our good, those of us who love Him (Romans 8:28). Therefore, in the midst of your fears, praise God for the promises of His word which He has given us, and trust in Him. Look your fears in the face and say, “God is bigger than you, and He will take care of me no matter what happens.” The enemy would love to paralyze us with fear and destroy us with despair, but remember that Scripture says that “greater is He (God) who is in you than he (the enemy) who is in the world (1st John 4:4). For God is in absolute control of everything and we are His. He holds us in His hands and no one can take us away from Him (John 10:28-30). He loves us more than we can understand and nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8:35-39). So what have we to be afraid of? Yes, bad things will happen. Jesus Himself said, “in the world you will have trouble…” but He also said, “I leave you my peace.” (John 16:33).

Everything that happens to us in this life is by nature temporary, for nothing stays the same. Indeed, “what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. (2 Corinthians 4:18)”or, as some great preachers like to say, “if you can see it, it’s subject to change”. But Scripture says that “our light and momentary afflictions are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” (2nd Cor. 4:17) and “our present sufferings are not worth comparing to the glory that will be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:18). Our troubles don’t ever seem light or momentary when we are enduring them, but they are nothing in the light of eternity. When our troubles seem too heavy, we must remember to cast all our cares upon God, for He cares for us (1st Peter 5:7). We must stay yoked and connected to Him (Matthew 11:28-30). We worry about things sometimes as if it depended entirely on us, as if the world rested upon our shoulders, but God holds all the world in His hands and expects of us simply this – complete surrender to and trust in Him for every moment of our lives. So do not fear the enemy who has already been defeated on the cross, neither fear man who can kill the body but after that can do nothing else to you, but rather, fear God (Matt. 10:28) and nothing else will shake you.

Point to Ponder

Is there anything that you fear so much that it might cause you do disobey God? While we cannot simply make fear go away, we can remind ourselves of what we should fear, and that is disobeying God. Always remember that God takes care of you and that you open yourself to His blessings when you obey Him. So really, what do you have to fear?

May we pray, “Almighty, sovereign God – thank You for the promises of Your word that brings us hope and reassurance. Thank You for being our strength and our shelter, our provider and our protector. May we always run to You, our God. Oh, Lord, help us to place our fears at Your feet so that we can see how small they truly are and how immeasurably strong and mighty You are. For You measured out the seas, You placed every star in the sky and You call them by name (Psalm 147:4). Amazing God! Nothing is impossible with You (Matthew 19:26)! May we trust You as You deserve. Whenever we start to become afraid, remind us that You are over it all. Let Your name be praised in all the earth. Amen.”
