I see them in my rear view mirror, the old couple in a faded green pickup truck. I watch them as we sit at the red light. I envy them. I envy their shared wrinkles and fading memories, their gray hair and gnarled hands. I envision them, late in the evening, sitting in a sparse living room, watching television and wondering how time got away from them so quickly. Every now and then, he, or she, will reach out and pat the other's hand, and I long to feel that touch. I want their dwindling days, days spent counting the grandchildren, maybe even a great grand or two, trying to keep up with the names and the faces. I want their remembered laughter over yesterday's silly things, dumb mistakes, and goofiness. I want to be that couple, aching limbs and all, walking gingerly into the fading twilight of today. Then, the light turns green and I leave them and my envy behind, until I see another old couple, and remember that I am no longer a couple, but a single.

How quickly life turns on us. Just when we think we have found all the pieces to the puzzle, life scatters the pieces, or changes the puzzle, and does not provide us with a picture of that which we are trying to put together.

So, here I am, new puzzle pieces all around me, and I'm just beginning to be able to fit some pieces together around the edge. I know that I will be a part of the puzzle picture, but I have no clue as to the rest of the picture. So, I pick up a piece here, a piece there, and try to make them work together, which they very seldom do, for I am just a limited mortal. How absolutely, then, must I, indeed all of us, trust the One who knows what the puzzle looks like before we even pick up the first piece. If we follow His lead, then He will help us put together the complete picture, with no lost pieces, or pieces we have forced to fit.

It really does not yet appear what we shall be, but one day the puzzle will be complete, for we shall see Him as He is, and we shall be like Him. Until that great day, we continue to look to Jesus, the author and the finisher of our faith, and the completer of our life puzzles.

In every thing give thanks, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
