Larry Lilly's Letter Thursday November 13, 2008

As with yesterday's letter I am hooked on friendship again as I prepare for a few or honestly and hopefully many radio, TV and even Newspaper interviews/appearances on behalf of my new book, I am searching for even more material to really help folks on the matter of being a true blue friend. I have been amazed at the lack of understanding concerning the principles of being a friend, whom others will cherish as a prized friend rather than just going through life like a Honey Bee, and taking while doing what Honey Bees do to plants. We don't have to be that way and the perfect plan for friendship is laid out rather clearly in the Bible. From this fountain of wisdom, many statements are mirrored in other ancient writings.

One of my heroes of antiquity, Cicero, the Roman lawyer and orator who accepted as his first challenge the plight of a poor farmer who was about to lose his farm to the Roman machine due to a tax lien. He sure got my heart when I read about this!

Concerning true friendship Cicero wrote:

"Man's best support is a very dear friend."

In a time of trouble I learned the importance of "very dear friends" and made up my mind to learn how to be such a person. I am making progress and I honestly believe my new soon to be released book, "Lasting Friendships in 30 Days" will help many to join me in this journey to becoming what our friends will note as a true friend for all seasons.

Of course due to my trust in the teachings of scripture, I have a very dear friend that sticks closer than a brother and who is on record that He will never leave nor forsake me, thus freeing me to really get on with life standing for what he has taught and if a get kicked around, make some real boo boos He is right there. Knowing that Jesus was walking the halls of Justice at my side was a comfort that only those who have walked that path understand. Knowing He was and is with me gives me the courage to continue in the garden or the battlefield with His song in my heart.

I heard a preacher on TV the other day who has been through it and he is on his way back to great usefulness say, "I would not have made it without Jesus and friends like Larry Lilly." That sure put me in good company!!

If you stop and think about it, most of you, my dear readers, would in your heart of hearts like to be known as a true friend. It seems like the easiest thing to be a true friend and if you get over yourself it is, but alas, alack, as long as we wonder, "What will my other friends think if I go to the side of this friend right now?" you do not have hardly a prayer of being a friend.

Being a friend has some humor in it as was pointed out by Pastor Steve Goens when he replied to my letter yesterday concerning my State Trooper friend who hugged me. Steve said, "Larry, not to burst your bubble, but he wasn't hugging you, he was checking you for weapons!" As you can see, with the kind of friends I have I don't need enemies.
