Jeremiah 33:14-16 – The Candle of Hope
Background:
The prophet Jeremiah worked through a very dark time in Hebrew history. King after king ignored the warnings of this prophet and turned the nation away from God and towards sin and idolatry. Jeremiah presented to the people a message of punishment and retribution should they not change their ways and turn, once again, to God. As the darkness of defeat, destruction, and exile began to ascend, Jeremiah’s message turned to hope and to the promise that peace and prosperity would return.
Key Verses: (NIV)
- 14: “The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel…” – In the midst of darkness it is sometimes difficult to maintain hope, but the light of God’s faithfulness is always there to follow.
- 15: “In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David…” – The Davidic Covenant stated that if they follow God then David’s throne will endure forever. God knows that the darkness caused by the people turning away from Him is only temporary and that, through Jesus, His promise to David will be assured.
- 16a: “In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety.” – These are words of hope to carry people through the destruction of Jerusalem and temple at the hands of the Babylonians that is about to occur.
- 16b: “And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’” – “Christ is our Lord God, our righteousness, our sanctification, and our redemption. His kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.”1

Promises of the Gospel:
At times it feels that only darkness prevails. Our lives can be filled with so much pain and suffering that we can only feel the darkness. Much of this darkness has been brought about by our own ungodliness. We have created a life where we are trapped by our own failures and ill-fated decisions. We have tried controlling our destiny and have come to realize that we need help. We need a light to follow. When we listen to the promises of God, when we turn our focus on His righteousness, we will be safe and secure.
For this first week in Advent, we light the Candle of Hope.
