Over the top lads
Let’s do it for the King
Up and at em Tommies
Let’s do the Kaiser in
Heads up lads
Let’s show some heroism
Death to the Hun
Hurrah for Jingoism
Over the top we go
Putting aside our fears
Then the hail of shot
And we fall like tears
A generation’s youth
Drowning in the mud
Ghosts of our future
Drowning in our blood
Stout hearted we came
Beneath the Belgian sky
We came to fight for honour
Instead we fall and die

Powerful little poem, Paul. The last stanza brought tears to my eyes. Appropriately posted as we approach the 11th November.
All war is horrible, but this particular war was one of the worst--something I'd never fully understood until, strangely enough, I watched the last season of Blackadder. The last episode is very much about going "over the top," and the last scene undoes me every time. Horrendous war; horrendous waste of life.
Oh my ... you've got me on a soapbox. I'll get down now and thank you for sharing this, and for reminding me why we pause to remember.
