Prologue- The Kingdom of Hawkens and Pandora
His throne was laced with gold and silver, embedded with dark-coloured jewels and rinestones.
A gathering of fallen angels with multiple black wings had their heads bowed, relaxing their muscles to they were utterly and deathly still.
As I approached his dark throne, I felt like my whole body was a deadweight. All of the council of twenty-nine was staring at me with red eyes.
I know at this point that I-Pandora, first of the fallen angels- shouldn’t be afraid of Overlord Hawkens and his council. But I’d only been down here twice-this being my second time.
The dark air almost choked me. It was like a dark cloud was filling my lungs-making it nearly impossible to breathe.
Overlord Hawkens isn’t a fallen angel. Not exactly. He doesn’t have his wings anymore. They just sort of-dissapeared one-by-one. He used to have a large expanse of twenty black wings-four of which that coiled around his body like a robe of darkness. The whole debate about his wings dissapearing got to everybody, and I was asked to come down here. This is why I’m here. In the Underworld where unspeakable beasts and the most evil of the fallen angels gather and thrive in darkness.
Even I, the first of the fallen angels, am not as cruel or dark as any of these pathetic peices of scum. I have a heart, no matter how black.
“Ah, Pandora.”
His voice boomed like a thousand nuclear bombs going off at once. I flicked my eyes up suddenly. It was almost snappy the way I fell to my knees, bowing my head, letting my black hair fall over my face. I expanded my twelve wings as a gesture of courtesy. It hurt, being in this position for so long, as the silence seemed to be so deep I could hear my pulse in my ears. the silence suddenly shattered, making me wince.
“My wings, Pandora. Where have they gone?” It was as if he expected me to know. I tentitively raised my head, knowing that a simple: “I dunno” could get me killed.
“Sir, I’m sure that it has nothing to do with me. Or you. Someone else must be responsible.” My voice needed to be strong. Tremble-free.
There Hawkens stood, just a few feet away from me. He was huge, like a giant, over ten feet tall. Bigger than Goliath. He sighed.
“That is plausable.” I folded a few of my wings back into my back, standing firmly on two legs. I couldn’t look into his red eyes. It was just impossible to escape from his blood-red trance.
“Overlord Hawkens......” I said slowly. “You know who is responsible. Please, do tell. I will take care of them. Even if you don’t get your wings back I will do anything in my great power to avenge the loss of your wings.”
Wings were a big deal for us fallen angels/angels. They contained all of our mystical power. Some call it black magic, and others call it wizardry. But it isn’t. It never is. It’s different. Just in-human abilites, is all.
“Hmmmm....After all of these years you have been able to trigger what I am thinking rather well. Very well, I shall tell.”
All eyes turned to him. Like someone had turned them on. Like they had been off. Like they had been dead.
“Five children. Angels. They have taken my wings. The Great Prophecy portrays that when these angels are born, my wings and my great power will be transfered to them. And they will grow to learn of my evil and seek to destroy me. And they will succeed.”
“Impossible!” Came a caterwaul of despair and disbeleif.
“But that isn’t possible-” I murmered.
“It will not happen if you destroy them-true yo your word, Pandora.”
He had me. Hawkens and set me into a trap. I had to keep my promise now. I had to find some way around this. I wasn’t going to kill five innocent children. That would be wrong.
“I will need help for such a great task. If there are five, I will need assistance.” There was muffled murmerings rippling through the crowd of fallen angels.
“There is truth behind your words,” Hawkens mumbled. He paused, placing the tips of his long, spindly fingers together. “I will send Jareth with you.”
Jareth?
My brother?
“Sir, are you positive? My brother isn’t the killing type.”
“Neither are you, Pandora.” Once again, he had me. I growled. Hawkens didn’t seem to mind much. He understood my frustration. Everyone in the council did.
