“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts;
The whole earth is full of His glory!”--Isaiah 6:3b


Here’s what’s most important about God: He is holy.

To be holy is to be different, separate. What makes a church distinct from any other building? What makes the Bible different and separate from any other book? Why does the Bible say Christians are holy saints?

The Bible never says, “be love, as He is love”. The Gospel is about a relationship with a holy God who loves, not a loving God who’s holy. That’s why Jesus pleaded, “repent and believe the good news”. Sinners need to repent and submit to the truth of a holy God dying for sinful man. That’s what makes the Gospel so glorious-a holy God chooses to provide salvation in spite of what man truly deserves. He allows the repentant to have an intimate relationship with Him even though they fall short of His glory. God is not just “Abba” He is “Abba, Father”. Abba is Daddy, a term of intimacy connected to Father, a term of authority.

The Biblical God is Lord who has a holy love, not a manly, earthly love. Man’s love is conditional and sentimental. God will still, as Holy Judge, judge those who do not submit to what He has provided and prescribed. He is not sentimental.

In the Temple, Isaiah did not hear the Angels say, “Love, Love, Love”. When something is repeated it is an expression alluding what sets God above and separate from man-His holiness. The cross is a solution and statement against something that offends a holy and loving God. While it speaks of His love, it also speaks of man’s problem. The cross is a disgusting, offensive thing because it is a statement against sin. God says through the cross, “I am serious about this!”

We are meant to confess our sins to the Lord because we are to keep short accounts with a holy God. He forgives in His holy, loving nature. Man does not love like that because his love is frail and sinful. Man naturally seeks to retaliate and revenge.

It seems a holy God is a God one can rely upon, because to be less is to be like man, who is totally unreliable, inconsistent, changing. I can count on a holy God be just in His judgments. A holy God never changes, so He is one who keeps His promises. God will allow those who submit to His Son into heaven because His love is holy, unchanging, and glorious in truth and judgment. God is faithful to His nature because His nature is holy.

To say God will let someone into heaven because He loves him is an incomplete Gospel. An incomplete gospel is a false gospel. One must believe and repent because He is holy.
