As I relaxed in my living room after a very long day, my peaceful thoughts were jarred by the sound of a fast-approaching siren. An ambulance whirred past the living room window. Seems like I am hearing them a lot lately.

Normally I don’t think much about them after they are gone, but this time something in my spirit was jolted…….

That is what it sounds like in the heavenlies when we pray! As we intercede for others, God responds by dispatching his ministering angels. His Holy Spirit transmits the facts of the situation back to God Central:

Holy Spirit: “Status check: Situation pretty serious, Sir. Trials with multiple casualties. The one in front of me was walking in faith and tripped. Looks like a compound fracture and a broken spirit. Gonna need setting and casting in order to stand firmly again. To the right of me is a wounded heart, needs immediate resuscitation. Yes Sir, we’ll get to it right away. Two people to my left fell into trials, and got all scraped up. Healing balm of Gilead has been dispensed, after we washed the wound with the Word. What Sir? Tell them to wash the wound three times a day with the Word for about two weeks, then daily after that? Yes, will do…… This last guy is a tough one though, Sir. Somehow he got a log in his eye, and it has blinded his spiritual vision. He can only see things judgmentally. Will you instruct me on a treatment plan for him? Great….… But sir, it’s a pretty serious situation out here. There are wounded everywhere, yet they have not all been called in. Is there more help on the way?” (Voice trails off to private conversation with the Great Physician)

… Can God help them all simultaneously, all by Himself? Absolutely. But He beseeches us throughout scripture to intercede, to pray without ceasing, to take a stand, to cry out to Him with needs and concerns.

No, God does not NEED us in order to help the hurting, the lost, the dying…. but He invites us to partner with Him. He allows us to be His hands, His feet, His heart - to reach the hurting who live all around us – both the ones in the faith and the ones who are not.

So next time you hear a siren, let it remind you to pray!

And remember: The fervent prayer of the righteous accomplishes much.
