A Friend Indeed

There was a flash then a loud boom. It was as though Marine Sergeant Kirk Mac Murray was watching everything in slow motion. When the smoke cleared, Marine Private Lester Williams lay wounded from a roadside bomb blast. Within a matter of minutes, Marines emerged to see to Private Williams’ wounds. In less than ten minutes, he was in an Army hospital.

Two young doctors examined the leg carefully. At first, the doctors considered amputation as their only alternative. What changed their original diagnosis were the pleas of Private Williams. He believed his leg could he saved in spite of his injuries.

One of the two doctors turned to Private Williams, “There’s going to be a great deal of pain, but if you’re wanting to try, let’s work towards saving your leg.”

Sergeant Mac Murray sat next to Private Williams, and prayed for the next six hours, while the surgeons carefully and as gently as he could labored to save his leg.

After three days, gangrene set in. In spite of anesthetics, the pain to the young Marine was excruciating, yet the doctor would not give up nor did Private Williams or Sergeant Mac Murray.

This event was in 2005. Private Williams has his leg to this day. He walks a though no such injury ever occurred. Thanks to God, a surgeon who refused to take the easy way out as well as a stubborn prayer warrior in Sergeant Mac Murray, Private Williams does very well today.

Private Williams’s story is an illustration of a young man who demonstrated a great deal courage. Anything worth saving whether personal or even a nation is worth the pain. Jesus, Himself, did not take the easy way out, either. He suffered, excruciating pain to free humanity.
