The Secret for Proper Management of Dreams

Have you ever dreamed a dream? Certainly, any normal human being will answer ‘yes?to this question. But when it comes to the question ‘Do you manage your dreams properly?? many will utter a hesitant ‘yes?

Proper management of dreams is one of the subjects little spoken of. Even the few teachings on dreams do not lay a significant emphasis on how to properly manage dreams. In fact, very little is said on how to recognize God-given dreams, how to interpret them appropriately and what actions to carry out concretely in response to God-emanating dreams. As a result, many problems do occur not only within households, but also in our congregations. As a proof, some have had bad accidents because of their neglecting God-given dreams; others have passed away (so sad to say) because they or someone overlooked God’s message through a dream; our church walls, I am sure, can report several cases of intra-congregational divisions due to misunderstanding of dreams; some servants of God have even served a catalysts of hatred within households because of their not knowing how to manage God-given dreams responsibly.

Fortunately enough, this publication, I hope, will point at the right path that leads to best management of dreams.

With a view to suggesting an effective remedy to the crucial issue of improper management of dreams, I find it relevant answering four fundamental questions:

- Why does the Lord speak through dreams?
- How do you recognize dreams from the Lord?
- How can you interpret appropriately God-given dreams?
- What should you do after grasping the Lord’s message conveyed through a dream?


Why Does the Lord Speak through Dreams?

The Bible records several instances wherein the Lord spoke to various people through dreams. In all the cases God had a specific aim. By the way, Job 33.14-18 clearly reveals God’s purpose in speaking through dreams:

For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perveiveth it not.
In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon
men, in slumberings upon the bed; Then he openeth the ears of
men, and sealeth their instruction, that he may withdraw man
from his purpose, hide pride from man. He keepeth back his soul
from the pit, and from perishing by the sword.

Obviously, this passage of Scripture shows that the Lord uses dreams to instruct us and save us from evil. To put it more clearly, when God gives you a dream, He intends to urge you to act in certain way so as to avoid some evil.

For instance, the Lord gave Pharaoh two dreams one same night in order to forewarn him of a seven-year famine to come (Genesis 41.1-7). In fact, God’s aim was not merely to have those dreams interpreted by Joseph. Rather, He also and mostly expected them to act in a certain way to avoid the evil pointed out ?the dreadful famine. Fortunately, Joseph, after interpreting the dream appropriately, got a successful action plan implemented so as to prevent the seven-year famine from harming the Egyptian population and, of course, his own family.

So God speaks through dreams to give us important instructions and warnings which are meant to urge us to some specific actions that help us keep away from some evil.


How Do You Recognize God’s Dreams?

It is noteworthy that the dreams we dream may come from the Lord (Job 33.14-18), or from our own brains (Ecclesiastes 5.3), or even form Satan (II Corinthians 11.14).
Below are some key features of the dreams that truly come from the Lord.

◙ Your mind remains marked
Undoubtedly, the Lord cannot give you a dream so that you forget it. On the contrary, He expects you to keep it fresh in mind so that you can act in the specific way He wants you to.

◙ No contradiction with God’s Word
Never is God the author of confusion (I Corinthians 14.33). Neither can He change His Word (James 1.17). Reason why He cannot give you a dream that stands in discrepancy with the dreams He gave you previously. Besides, He cannot urge you to act in violation of His own laws!

◙ The aim is good
God is Good, and wishes only good to happen to each of us (Jeremiah 29.11). That is why a dream from God cannot lead to actions that bring about trouble to you or to others.

◙ The aim is spiritual
God’s primary concern is the good of man’s soul. Remember Job 33.18 states, “He [God] keepeth back his soul from the pit …” In this regard, a dream whose main aim is the satisfaction of the flesh (such as having sexual intercourses) is not from God.



How Can You Interpret God’s Dreams?

Something is for sure: When the Lord gives you a dream, He always expects you to understand its core message (although some dreams are enigmatic).

Moreover, it is useful to note that though some people are exceptionally gifted to interpret dreams, everybody can still get the interpretation of dreams. This is because God is not a respecter of persons (Acts 10.34-35), and has promised to reveal us anything we ask Him to (Jeremiah 33.3).

To properly interpret dreams, it is useful to endeavor to answer questions of this type: Why this dream to me? What is the core message? Why this dream now and not yesterday or tomorrow? Why was I in such an environment? Why that wearing? Why such a countenance? Why speak in such a manner? What am I supposed to do in response to this dream? Certainly, your endeavor to answer such questions, especially with some prayer, will put you on the right route to grasp God’s message.

In fact, some dreams are literal in form, whereas others are symbolic. Note that symbolic dreams are so tricky that it is unwise hastening to ascribe an interpretation. Rather, it is advisable to spend some time in prayer and serious meditation. What to Do after Grasping God’s Message?

Remember that the finality of each dream is to urge us to some specific actions. Below are the key appropriate actions in respect of dream messages.

◙ Thanksgiving

As long as a dream is from God, no matter what its core message is, we should always give thanks to the Lord since it is meant for our good (Ephesians 5.20).

◙ Writing it down

It is vitally important to have a special notebook wherein you write all the dreams God gives you. This will help you see the logic in God’s language since some dreams are complementary to one another and/or to some other forms of revelations the Lord may use.
Note that God expects us to write the visions that He gives us (Habakkuk 2.2-3, Revelation 1.19, 14.13, 19.9, 21.5).

For certain, writing dreams down, which is a sign of honor to the Lord, will encourage Him to speak further through the medium of dreams.

◙ Prayer

Sometimes, God’s message may be to entice you to pray so that some evil cannot occur to you or to some person.

It is important to bear in mind that, in some cases, the Lord does not really want you to reveal the dream to others. Rather, He simply expects you to pray for them. Even if you are to reveal the dream, make sure that it will edify the recipient. Besides, you should use a wise and decent way to tell it.

◙ Faith

Some dreams, especially the ones related to blessings, are designed to strengthen our faith lest we should fall into discouragement, doubt, fear, or grief when in front of challenges. Indeed, the fact of remembering God’s promises through dreams (especially when written down) is faith-energizing.

◙ Other actions

God’s message through dreams may also aim to urge you to implement some other actions such as repentance, increasing your prayers, counseling some person, assisting someone, visiting some particular individuals, making special arrangements for a relevant project, getting ready to manage a particular blessing, and many more.

Though not all has been said on this broad topic, it is, nevertheless, essential to keep in mind that dreams are important channels whereby the Lord can convey particular information extremely vital to our individual lives and, of course, to our congregations. This truth is obvious only when we happen to properly manage God-given dreams in respect of all that has been discussed in this article.
