Larry Lilly's Letter Monday October 13, 2008

Life has its surprises so I thought the story headline in the New York Times was truly surprising and after two days of by passing it, I bit, opened the link and was deeply moved by the quality and fairness of the piece.

I really try to keep my politics to myself, but I do admit to at least noting which media outlet is for whom and then use my common sense filter when reading, watching or listening. To give you some idea of my leanings I think Colin Powell and Sarah Palin would be unbeatable.

After reading the mentioned piece in the Times, I made a vow that I will never again assume that the teaser has anything to do with my perception of the story based the headline. I understand the Times leans more than a little toward the left, so I was intrigued by the teaser and as I said after two days I gave up, hit the link wondering why the Times was promoting John McCain, and with such gorgeous photos.

"Old Dogs Are The Best Dogs."

When the title is read as a standalone piece what right minded person, man or woman, no right/left brain activity here, wouldn’t think, "This has to be about McCain's age and therefore a polemic against ageism."

I am in the fight against ageism, due to my age. I am more than old enough to collect Social Security, but I do not due to a statement I signed long ago correctly admitting that I as a preacher of the gospel am against socialism in any form. I do not have a socialist hair on my head, really I don't have much of any kind of hair on my head, so, again my utter surprise at the Times title.

The title of the story was politically loaded for the aged, thus my assumption that it was a push for McCain.

But there was no subtle meaning in the title. The story I found was about dogs. To be sure I would rather read about dogs than people, even John McCain any day.

In spite of my age, I am encouraged that the Bible teaches God did, can and will use people of any age who are in tune with His program for their life. The Trinitarian statements that God is not limited by time or space, which is the foundation for Einstein's concepts of relativity, based on Augustine's study of the Incarnation revealed this truth to him in the long ago. Chuck Colson writes; "Life's value doesn't depend upon where we are in time; whether we are young, middle aged, or old. We see life, all of life and all of the time that God created for us, as a gift. Thus, the greatest time of our life may occur at any point in our lives."

Regardless of your age, God may just have some grand thing waiting for you right around the corner. And remember, according to the New York Times, Old Dogs Are Best.
