LOVE MEANS NEVER HAVING TO SAY YOU'RE SORRY

Remember the famous movie line “Love means never having to say you’re sorry”? Oh hogwash! At least in my life that is not so! It is precisely because of love that we can learn to say we are sorry!

Love is the chalk that God uses to write out the lessons of love on the blackboard of our hearts. And, being human, we make mistakes…. Often. I am sorry I hurt you. I am sorry that once again I thought of myself first. I am sorry I forgot how important that event was to you. I am sorry that I am oblivious to the part you play in my life. I am sorry that I did not listen to you.

If it were not for love – and God teaching us how to give and receive it – we would be a sorry lot of self-centered, stiff-necked, egotistical people.

But in His mercy, so rich and new every morning, He repeatedly demonstrates how to love – first at Calvary, and then daily as we are invited to enter into relationship with Him. Then He shows us how to relate to the world around us, and with a few select very special people that He calls our family and friends.

So… to me .. love means learning HOW to say you’re sorry.

And it means learning how to live a richer, deeper, fuller life and the art of letting others get close to us. And that, my friend, is better than any movie!

How true all you say is, Laraine. I've known, and loved people in my life that could never say that they were sorry. Sometimes, they try to say it by taking you out for a beer, or bring home flowers (depending on who was hurt.) When it gets down to it, we should feel sorry for the people who find it so hard to apologize. In apologizing, we heal wounds and release ourselves from the weight of unforgiven grievances. Love dies slowly when there is no room the express sorrow at hurting the other person.
