Most of us are familiar with the words of the beautiful old hymn “Amazing grace how sweet the sound that saved a wretch like me, I once was lost but now am found, was blind now I see.” While the words of the hymn rings true, but it doesn’t define grace.

I have heard an acrostic of grace God’s Riches At Christ’s Expense but what does it mean to the ‘average’ person? Perhaps the best way for me to define grace is to paint a word picture for you by way of a story.

Once upon a time Saten went before God and said “Okay God, what will you trade me for this pathetic little creature, this miserable sinner Syam Babu, He is not worth much; make me an offer. God says ‘not worth much”? To me he is worth everything; you can have my son Jesus Christ. I will take Syam Babu and you can have Jesus. Then Saten falls for the deal. He is overwhelmed; he accepts the offer, thinking he came out ahead, not understanding what this stuff was in small print about some kind of resurrection from the dead. Saten could not grasp that. He could not believe that! Saten took the offer of Jesus in exchange for Syam Babu (or use your name in place of mine), Three days later Saten GOT WIPED OUT! Grace means a deal signed in blood. Jesus blood in exchange for mine.

Grace is the gift that enabled Jesus to say to the thief on the cross, this day you will be with me in paradise despite a life of stealing. Grace is that which enables Jesus to say to the women caught in the act of adultery “neither do I condemn you, go. and sin no more” Grace tells a women desperate for the masters healing touch “daughter your faith has made you heal” Grace is what was shown to the Roman centurion when Jesus raised his child from the dead. Grace is what tells a hardened criminal, there is room at the cross for him or her. Grace weeps at the graveside of a loved one but whispers because of the resurrection.

Joy comes in the morning and offers comfort in knowing ‘morning’ will surely come. Grace allows room for doubts and fear while still offering hope grace. God’s grace, grace that is greater than all my sin. Grace tells me I am not my own but belong body and soul in life and death to my faithful saviour Jesus Christ.

He has fully paid for all my sins with His precious blood, and has set me free from the tyranny of the devil. He watches over me in such way that not a single hair can fall from head without the will of our Father in Heaven. In fact He will work all things together for good. Grace is the ability Christ has to look beyond my faults and see my need.
