Being A Blessed Receiver

“It is more blessed to give than to receive,” has always been Air Force Major Jo Ann Dougherty’s, a Registered Nurse, motto while on duty in Iraq. At least this has been her motto for most all of her life until she learned that receiving can also be a blessing as well.

Without any warning, Major Dougherty came down with an illness that the medical team concluded was the flu. Eager to get back to work she tried, without success, to make her usual rounds on the hospital’s south wing but could not muster the strength to even get out of her bed. It was at this point Major Dougherty would have given anyone who offered to help her, even give her a small glass of water, would receive a hug of appreciation and a grand “Thank you”.

Finally, Captain Clara Busby, also a nurse, showed up with a homemade pot of chicken noodle soup, insisting that the Major take it to get her strength back. The two nurses chatted until Captain Busby got up and said, “Let me do your dishes, vacuum and sweep your living area Major while we talk.”

“Absolutely not,” Major Dougherty said almost as soon as the Captain stated her willingness to lend the Major a helping hand.

“With all due respect Major Dougherty,” Captain Busby said, “it’s not easy to be a receiver, but give me the opportunity, ma’am to be a giver. Don’t you think it’s a great idea for you to let me enjoy the blessings of being one, Major?”

Captain Busby was absolutely correct! A giver needs a receiver to give to who receiver humbly in the spirit of God as well
