In the summer of 2003, Saint Benedict Church, Somewhere, Oklahoma learned of the death of its most valued member—Somebody Else. Somebody Else’s death created an immediate vacuum that church members determined will be difficult if not impossible to fill. Somebody Else was a member of the church for more than ten years. During those years, Somebody Else participated in a greater than normal share of the church’s activities.

When there was a job to be done, a committee to lead, a conference or seminar to attend or a youth group to lead, the person that everyone looked to was Somebody Else. Whenever the church met for important meetings and needed someone to do a job, generally the first person’s name mentioned was Somebody Else. The usual statement from the committee was, “Let Somebody Else do it! Or Somebody Else is available for the task!”

When the church mentioned someone for a leadership role, there was ole’ Somebody Else there “Johnny On The Spot” to do the job! Somebody Else was a wonderful person who would inspire anyone who was around. Whenever Somebody Else pursued a task, results were always well done and, for the most part, way beyond the accomplishments of a normal person.

Every church member came to recognize that Somebody Else gave more time and treasure than anyone in the church. Whenever there was a need for money, everyone just knew that Somebody Else could raise the money even if the task appeared impossible. When Somebody Else took on the job, it got done!

Somebody Else had an excellent personality. Little children, teenagers and even adults just loved Somebody Else. Somebody Else was a person anyone could talk to and did—often. If the truth be known, Somebody Else’s closest friends felt that Somebody Else did too much. They felt that Somebody Else let everyone else take advantage of that kind, generous heart that Somebody Else possessed.

Now that Somebody Else has died, everybody wonders what they are going to do. Everybody agrees that Somebody Else has left a legacy and example that will be difficult to follow. Now people near and far are asking the question, “Who is going to do it? Who is going to take Somebody Else’s place? Do we want just ANYBODY ELSE to take Somebody Else’s place?”

Those of us—children, teenagers and adults are, in fact, SOMEBODY. Somebody whose Time. Talent and Treasure even a teeny, weenie bit can mean a great deal when it comes to God’s work! So you should think of what your talents are and step up the plate like Somebody Else did because—No one can depend on Somebody Else any longer!
