In a day and age where politicians do anything and everything to win our vote, it is no wonder that it is very hard to trust them. They will promise you the earth but don’t even deliver a town. Their mouths are always full with right answers, they are all over the media, everything new about them is breaking news. Their faith however, stands in the shadows, where it won’t hurt the politically correct society they are so eager to reign over.

It is hard, even in the Bible, to find kings who put their faith before their esteemed position. You read about kings of Israel and Judah who did their ‘best’ to succeed without having to go against the other nations and their gods. They sacrificed to idols, adopted other nations’ religious customs, and even married idolatrous women, so they could have more power, more influence, and more success. For most of them, God was shoved aside, forgotten and uncalled for.

One king, however, stands out from all others. The Bible says that there was none like him before or after his time in Judah. His father had done all kinds of evil things, including sacrificing of one of his own sons for the gods. Hezekiah hated to see his people having to import all the evil Assyria believed in. He hated to see his father completely indifferent to the God of their fathers. When the time came for him to reign in his father’s place, he was determined to change all that.

Hezekiah was only 25 and yet, wiser than most kings before him. He started his reign by cleaning up Judah of all the idols and religious rituals that the neighbouring countries had exported to them. He simply put things in order. He then cut all ties with Assyria, the strongest nation at that time, because of his trust in God.

As with everything in life, when you want to do good, the world comes against you. Judah was threatened. Assyria came down hard on all the nations next to Judah, including Israel. Hezekiah humbled himself and took the matter to God, something you won’t see politicians do nowadays. And, because of Hezekiah’s faith and God-fearing heart, God rescued Judah from Assyria in a mighty way.

Soon after that, he became very ill and Isaiah, the prophet at the time, told him that God had said he die from this illness. Life was unfair even back then! But Hezekiah’s faith was such that he didn’t see the situation he found himself in, reason to complain or turn against God as many people do. Hezekiah didn’t go and cry in his wife’s arms, instead he cried out to God… ‘Please Lord, remember how I have walked before You faithfully and wholeheartedly and have done what is good in Your sight.’ Then he wept bitterly.

This action reminded God to do something that He had never done before—He changed His mind. He healed Hezekiah and, as a sign, He turned back the clock. Now, can you imagine God turning back the time just because of one prayer? Now let’s read that prayer again.

Faithfulness walks together with faith. A person can only be faithful when he or she has faith and that’s the problem with most politicians today. They may say they’re faithful, but are they? The faithful are hard to find… but God knows them.
