Evolution basically states that an organism improves with age. That is, it changes from a simple form to a more complex form with time. The simple becomes complicated, the weak becomes strong and the dumb becomes smart. But as I read some of the works of early writers and then walk the streets of any large city in America, if language is a gage of development then we are regressing, not advancing. I have read the letters of Charles Spurgeon written to his parents when he was seventeen years old and I have yet to hear any one, a seventeen year old or otherwise, speak or write with such depth and eloquence. To me it is obvious that the theory of evolution totally disintegrates when applied to modern language. Today we speak in “code,” Tomorrow, who knows?
One of my favorite authors is a guy who wrote an epic work on ‘The Existence and Attributes of God” in 1682. Stephen Charnock wrote with eloquence, depth and with a talent to prick the heart as much as the head. He leaves me with two reactions, questions and hunger. Questions that make me ponder and hunger that makes me seek. The book is enormous and after a year of reading a few pages daily I am proudly in the middle of the book. Quite an achievement if I may say so.
My time with Charnock has been rich as well as provocative. His insight to the Christian mystery and man’s role in the celestial drama leaves me breathless. Few modern authors even attempted to breach the surface of the themes he uncovers. One of those themes he so eloquently touches on is that of the incomparable greatness and majesty of God. What he writes is worth the effort to read, and read s-l-o-w-l-y. You can see what I mean on his comments about the incomprehensibility of God.
“He that fills the heaven and earth cannot be contained in anything; he fills the understanding of men, the understandings of angels, but is comprehended by neither; it is rashness to thing to find out any bounds of God; there is no measuring of an infinite Being; if it were to be measured it were not infinite; but because it is infinite, it is not to be measured.”
He continues:
“Nothing is more present than God, yet nothing is more hid; he is light; and yet obscurity; his perfections are visible yet unsearchable; we know there is an infinite God, but it surpasseth the compass of our minds.”
It makes you think, can the finite comprehend the infinite? Can the creature truly understand the Creator? If the Creator wants to discover himself how should he do so? How could God reveal Himself with boundaries suitable for man to understand? This is what makes the mystery of Jesus so magnificent! This was the marvelous miracle of the incarnation of Christ! (Heb.1:2-3) God made himself visible and comprehensible to the finite by dressing the Word with flesh.
But Charnock continues with the mystery of the incomprehensibility of God the Father.
“How can we then comprehend God, who exceeds all, and is exceeded by none; is above our understanding, as well as above our sense?
In an attempt to answer the question he responds with an astounding quote.
“He is known by faith, enjoyed by love, but comprehended by no mind.”
What a powerful statement! God is know through faith, something that all men possess; enjoyed by love, the fountain of unlimited satisfaction; but comprehended by no mind, the security of knowing that God is in control of all.
For me this inability to comprehend the infiniteness of God gives me indescribable comfort and peace in a world gone mad!
I mean, after all, wouldn’t it be a little worrisome to have a God that you could comprehend?
