The Important Things

After completing the expansion bridge across Baghdad, Navy Lieutenant Edgar Evans spoke out. Too much time and energy was being spent worrying about the grand structures of this city and not enough time caring for those who have to live here.
“Roads, airports and store fronts are important. In addition to all of these things, we’ve got to be doing the Lord’s work here in Baghdad. If we are to serve Him fully, we’ll see, eventually, that He’ll take care of the small stuff.
“I know this is an Islamic country,” Lieutenant Evans continued. “Instead of being concerned about what religion they are and the fact they were our enemies, we should get simple little food baskets together. I’ll bet the every day, common Iraqi won’t care who they got the food from. I prefer it be us though. But I really think they will appreciate it—a lot!”
When Lieutenant Evans was finished, his commanding officer, Commander Jason Lee thought his junior officer mighty naïve to think that God would step in to take care of the needs of the United States Navy and re-build Baghdad city. But his idea received the enthusiastic support of the Admirals and General officers within his command structure.
A week before Christmas, the Navy came through. There were over two thousand baskets of food. Food, many had not eaten for many years during the Saddam Hussein era. And in each basket was a leg of lamb.
After the Christmas season, the American armed services command noticed the cooperation of the citizens of that Baghdad community had grown. Word of what the American military had done spread around the community. Soon generous American military personnel of the armed services re-built their local electric grids, bridges and buildings. But local citizens of Baghdad, more than these works, mentioned the food baskets they had received. Men, women and children came forward to remove ruble to help Americans with the rebuilding of their community. Despite what news outlets had reported, peace and cooperation reigned in this Baghdad community. Structures, in some areas, never seen before were put in place with little or no conflict from the local population.
Lieutenant Evans was right in his thinking. The Lord shelters those who earnestly believe only in Him and who will submit to serve Him unconditionally.
